Ironman 1200lb Winch
I purchased our Patrol a couple of years ago and have been happy with it, when we looked at it there was everything we needed on the car and it was ready to travel. It had an ironman 1200lb winch, until now we had never needed it.
We pulled out the winch cable and securely anchored it and there was no movement from the motor only the clicking of the solenoid.
We packed up with disgust and once we got home had a look at the winch and noticed one of the terminals had corroded off.
Has anyone had or seen this problem before?
Are the terminals available to be replaced?

Can't see why you wouldn't be able to, have you split open the winch and had a look inside the motor cover?

The winch needs to come apart and the terminal replaced but has to have very large solder done.. can be a bit fiddly but not hard at all.. if not confident an auto elect would find this an easy job.

It will be interesting to see what sort of condition the inside of the motor is in with that sort of corrosion on the terminal.

I dont think it will be to bad at all..... I pull mine apart semi regularly to make sure water is not sitting and the gears have fresh grease.

even tho it was already fitted to your bus, it shows these winches or over rated and over priced and fitted with cheap nasty components, hence the reason why I pulled mine apart and pissed the cheap nasty mild steel bolts off and fitted with high grade stainless bolts, then lathered all terminals with petroleum jelly, last thing I want to be not working if I get into a sticky situation

Ok, I have taken the winch apart and this is what I have found.
Lots of water ingress.

Wow ... well I was wrong......... that is very bloody average mate.
I would just about say it is cactus... would need to see first hand to make a more informed judgement but wow.....!!!!

Get online and see if a 6 HP warn will fit

I would say thats a bin job Richard, the field and bushes rail are defiantly shot, the armature may clean up but it will need new bearings, time a for a new winch motor mate

Make sure you drill and tap a breather/drain into the casing of the new winch motor and really seal it up with some silicone.
That will help prevent a lot of water damage in future.

Eeeeeyeeeewwwwwww, that is one gunked up mess.
All winches need a regular hug whether they are sealed or have a drain aperture.
If you have a winch with a drain make sure it is at "6 O'clock" when the winch is mounted
Many winches have the drain at 6 o'clock position from the factory BUT for a "feet horizontal" mounting.
Almost all Patrols have the winches mounted with the feet vertical (parallel to the number plate) and that means the winch motor will half fill with gunk.
If that is the case you need to rotate the motor 90 degrees to correctly reposition the drain but heaps of installers can't be bothered.

Wow, that's bad luck mate. I used to have one of the older Ironman 12000lb job's myself. Never really let me down, but the solenoids gave in when I needed them in the end.

I bought an X9 superwinch online and it had been on a 200series. It was spotless and the wire rope was almost unused. The fair lead had 1 Mark on it and I think that's the extent of the use.
I got it for about $360 for it and was stoked. When I got it home I was preparing to fit it and thought I'd better bench test it (nearlly didn't) and it did not work. Bugger me, I stripped the motor and it was not much better that the one above (serviceable though) I stripped the gearbox and it was the same. The free spool was seized and there was no way this thin would work.
Spent a day rebuilding this winch to be good as new. As soon as I saw the first pic I figured she was Knackered.
These need to be serviced. If you have a winch on the front that has done a few river crossings you should make sure it still works. They can look clean and tidy but can be eating itself from the inside. Every 1 to 2 years strip them out and strip them down and have a look. You will be relying on it one day.
That winch has been filled with water and left to rot unfortunately. I doubt it is serviceable and the gearbox is likely to be in similar condition. Interestingly Ironman now rate their winches as Waterproof. This one is obviously not, but is likely an older series.
The Brand of this winch I think is irrelevant, Warn, Ironman, Superwinch, TigerzII will all look like this if submerged without sealing and breathers and without regular servicing.
Strip it right down, it will probably be a write off mate sorry.

Like MudRunner said, the winch had been neglected buy the previous owner, not run in and out regularly. never cleaned.
