HDR, bracketing, tone mapped Have we been there yet?

Hi Guys/Gals.

Have we had a 'HDR' thread here on this forum yet? Or 'bracketing'? 'Tone map'?

You either like HDR/Tone mapping or not. I think there is a place for it when treated with restraint. I mostly just 'bracket'. Some cameras will have the ability to take a set of bracketed photo's

We have some crafty photographers here mate but not a dedicated HDR thread. There is a couple of photo threads floating around but go nuts I should learn this stuff and invest in a half decent camera!!!

AB, there is even an app or two floating around for smart phones also.

You can do it with a basic old SLR camera without 'bracketing' capability but you do need the program Photomatix http://www.hdrsoft.com/ ($100) or photoshop (ugh, at $700 odd bucks!)

Ive actually got the full adobe cs3 and use photoshop all the time for masking images and cropping but never used it for this type of thing.

I use HDR on my iPhone all the time. It really makes a difference to the shadowed area's in photos. Here's one I took of Lake George. As you say, you either like it or you don't. Personally I don't see what's not to like.

Thanks, that one actually broke my DSLR. I was taking a 3 bracketed shot of the fly trap and on the final photo something went boing, zip and snap and then I had no DSLR. Sent it away but they wanted more to fix it than it cost to buy another one so I took the chance to upgrade.

Just one more, probably my favourite. This is of Coolamine Homestead - Blue Waterholes.

So is this a feature that the camera has? I might have to look into mine but I doubt it has this kinda technology. it looks like something I'd be keen to have a go at!

I have done it for a while and can't remember the name of the plugin I used for Photoshop but I have used Photomatix and HDRSoft with excellent results.

What you do is take three photo's of the same subject using three different exposures. The idea is that an over exposed shot will hilight the shadowed area, then the correct exposure and under exposed will balance it out. Some camera's will do the three plus shots if selected. If not just take three different exposures.

You can trial the Photomatix by HDRsoft or buy the basic for $39.

Yeah mate, you can change the level of intensity. Even monochrome (black and white).

The HDR makes a average pic look great
