Summary of my High Country and far east Gippsland trip.
Last year we headed from Tom Groggin to Mt Howitt via the Wangaratta Valley. That's why we decided to drive from Mt Buller to Mt Howitt and then Lakes Entrance this year. Then to Mallacoota and back to Buchan and Mt Hotham. I only point out the interesting 4WD tracks here.
We headed into the National Park south of Mt Buller. Great camping but crowded after Xmas. First fun track was The Knobs Track: medium, scenic on top, overgrown on the eastern side.
On we went via Grimme Track: medium-difficult, remote, narrow, interesting creek crossing, steep, overgrown.
Followed by Blue Plains Ridge Track: medium, remote, scenic, great camping up there, great dip in Macalister River.
Butcher Country Track: difficult, western ascend was newly bulldozed (easy), along the top to Mt Howitt it's remote and rough with some white knuckle moments.
Haunted Stream Track: medium, most of the 50 odd crossings are easy, some are a bit more challenging, can be muddy (but wasn't).
Everything in Croajingolong (Cann River to Mallacoota) we drove was easy. Cleared about 10 trees.
Errinandra National Park was all 2WD but man it's beautiful up there.
Running Creek Track: medium-difficult, some steep descends.
Jacksons Crossing was easy but long and walking it can make sense as some areas could get quite deep. Beautiful camping.
Deddick Trail: difficult, some really steep sections. A highlight of an already interesting trip. You know you found an interesting track if they gave a section its own name: Mt Joan Staircase. That and the word "Staircase" and maybe that it's "dry weather only" on a 4WD track. The missus drove it like a champ. We winched a guy with trailer down the descend to McKillop Bridge. Note that of you drive this track south to north you will have two challenging descends and if you drive it north to south you will have to climbs to test yourself and your car.
McFarlane Flat Track: medium-difficult, remote, beautiful, brumbies, good camping spots.
Blue Rag Range Track: medium as it was freshly graded, very scenic.
