I can only speak on what I have. 3inch Redback system with no muffler and hi flow cat. BD systems I see always recommend 2 3/3inch. Some say that 3inch is too much and the smaller size gives you a little back pressure which you apparently need. I asked a customer of mine from a few years back who does exhaust systems for a living about this. He told me on a turbo diesel you need a system from intake to the end of the exhaust to be as free flowing as possible. The turbo does a fine job of creating enough pressure in the intake manifold.
But the only way to prove this would be to have both systems for the one vehicle and do a dyno test with each pipe. I would be keen to see the results.
So the zorst I have works good. Just contemplating now about removing the cat. Shhh!
I went with 3" Taipan on mine, 2011 3.0lt. Definitely an improvement over stock.
comes down to what model you have so if you could let us know would help. firstly a di or prior to late 07 I would say go the 3 inch but add your gauges and dawes valve to stop overboost issues now if you have a crd you can cause yourself dramas if you go the 3 inch, now I have the bd exhaust and its great and egr block and I don't have boost issues but I know some do have issues with the 3 inch
What dramas could you cause kevin07?
I have a 3" straight through system with sports Cat on my 04 Di.
The BD 2.75" system some say is perfect for the Common rail 3lt
Combined with a chip you'll get the most benefit from the exhaust,
along with EGR block.
What year is yours??
Lets face it they are pretty much choked from the factory
Hi All its a 3.0 Di 2004 model and yes the over pressure issues i think need to be addressed first. Still feeling nervous till i get the gauges and dawes installed etc. mudski do you recommend any particular gauges ? and what px range for the boost gauge will be neded? Cheers M
zero to 30 for boost , have you brought the pillar pod yet?
Also get the pyro in centigrade
VDO make a good gauge as do Autron, I run Speco white face
with no problems at all
Yeah sorry I was refering to 3inch zorst. Gotta love late night replies...
Is that the only reason for using a smaller pipe? Bang a Dawes valve in and that issue is gone....
Mont. Gauges I think is a personal thing. Just don't buy cheap rubbish. It will bite you in the ass in the end. I run a McNally boost and EGT gauge in one, looks sweet and fits neatly in between the tacho and speedo. It wasn't cheap, at around $300 for the one gauge but it is nice. I'm trying to resist the wog in me and not buy a pillar pod and fill it with gauges. If I do then I'll probably do something stupid and buy a massive tacho and shift light too. Like I said, its a personal choice. I think VDO and Autotron are the flavours around here though. Or the ones that TD has.
Mudski have you got a photo of the gauge u have would like to see how it fits between speedo and tacho
Still looking at a few different pillar pods probably going with autometer gauges . I suppose there are some threads in here regarding the install of the boost and pryo ? ill go and look those gauges look good above the column
I love my Autometer gauges with blue LEDs :)

I run a 3 inch extreme redback on my gu7(2011) and I have had absolutely no increase in boost( i do also have a tunit chip, not sure if that makes a difference). Kept a close eye on it before installing and then after..

Hmmm interesting topic im also looking at doing the exhaust in my 2002 3.0di might just go with the 2.75
I will also say one more thing about changing the exhausts. It is an absolute head f&$@ getting the heat shield off from around the turbo...... Once you suss it you can get it in and out easy but it takes some swearing or patience( which ever comes more naturally) and wear gloves it is razor sharp, sliced my finger without even realising( nothing major just a slice as if from a sharp knife)
Scotty
@ Dirtygu a 3' exhaust may suit you better being a Di, the 2.75" seem to suit the Cr better for some reason
Hi mate, I put 3" worth every $
