Stretch has asked me to ask people's thoughts about the 2.8 turbo diesel.
He says its a 6 cyl ( I couldn't answer him).
I assume its a real early GU.
How's the performance of them.
Things to be weary of.
Are they better than the early ZD grenades.
Any thought and info would be helpful.
My lappy is down at the moment to search thoroughly.
I tried on the phone but kept saying no matches.
Yes they are a 6 cylinder.
I read people have head issues but again hit and miss like the 3ltrs.
Is it better??? Dunno.
I ready there a top little revy motor but no good for towing.
The RD28 is a 6 cylinder Turbo Diesel that Nissan ran in the GQ and early GU and was superseded by the ZD30. It's a good strong engine that will take a modification well.
If he is looking at a GU then he is looking at a late model RD28 at the end of the development life so a good engine.
A little Nader powered as a Tow rig but will handle most things well.

They have about 95-105 kW. Apparently really awesome in low range almost unstoppable. And they sound absolutely fantastic with a 3 inch exhaust like a truck

As it's been said the only real issue is with the heads, they tend to crack but once replaced seem to be all good. Just make sure they have a good service history and it's dry (no leaks).

I have a 2.8td GQ with the 3" straight though as people have said not the best for towing but never let me down and I managed to keep up :)
I know a couple of guys who have 2.8 TD - they tow - but find they are under powered - they seem ok off road.
I thought they would be fine for the off road stuff, but I experienced watching Kev's truck (krbrooking) struggle on a few of the bigger hills. Where we said to use second gear and floor it, like we were doing, 3ltrs and 4.2 petrols, his just couldn't do it. He had to use first otherwise when he lost a little momentum he would lose enough rpm's in second to force him to stop and try again in first. If the engine was chipped and had a bigger exhaust it may have been a different story.
He had slick tyres on though. Would make a lot more difference than a bit more power.
I've been naughty and looking at 4.2 GU's lately, some how con the Missus into taking my car and I build a beast.

I had one for a couple of years and found it fine for general use. Never had a problem
I found that on the sand you had to get the revs up enough for the turbo to kick in for it to work well, which could if not careful lead to the wheels spinning and thus bogging.
Over all though I was very happy and only upgraded when I bought a boat. It was 24', fibreglass and over 3 tonne on the trailer. The 2.8 was just not up to the job.

My turbo spools very low in the rev range, by 2k rpm its already making around 8psi easily, Guess it depends on the condition of the turbo/motor etc.....
What does the 2.8 rev to?

My understanding is they are mostly Prado running gear under the body. Many common components. With a few mods they will be quite functional (spoken by a Jackaroo owner :) ). They have never been popular here but there were heaps of them in Saudi. A couple of guys in the club had them and liked them, but I honestly did not take much notice. Anything in Saudi with a Toy.... badge on it was almost like investing in gold, they held their resale value. Rear access seemed too strange for me.
Vision out the front windscreen is bloody ridiculous worse than a heep Wrangler. But as with anything each to their own and take it for a drive to see if he likes it
