Hey guys,
I have a 1989 Nissan Patrol GQ
About 6 months ago, dad was driving to work when he started hearing this from the engine.

The car has sat out the front of the house since then until now as i have time to work on it.
If someone has any idea whats possibly wrong with the engine i would be very grateful as it would make my life a lot easier when it comes to repairing the problem.

soundslike noisy tappet or lifter
rocker cover needs to come off to check
also when running put a screwdriver to different parts of motor and to your ear and listen
can give you an idear where it is comming from
Problem is in the valve train, when turning over I can hear that a valve is failing to seal.

thanks for the reply, ill have a look tomorrow, get some pics of what i find
are there hydraulic tappets used in this motors? it sounds like a valve in my ears.
Guess, as it sounds very loud over the engine.
Rocker adjusting bolt come loose and push rod hammering rocker etc.
Or broken rocker.
Or bent push rod.
check rocker shaft for wear on the under side.
I recently replaced my shaft and rockers and now the engine nice and quite again.
no more tick tick.

Ok that rules out the top of the Motor,
What about a bent valve as the Ferret suggests a valve not seating
only one way to find out.
Out with the spanners my friend, do these motors have a timing belt or chain ?
Maybe that's slipped a tooth
Start it up, hold a card against the end of exhaust pipe, the pressure should hold the card away, however if the card is pulled back against the exhaust now and then, you have a burnt valve, most likely exhaust valve.
If there was a hole in the piston or top of piston broken off, there would be huge blowby, A broken plug or a broken glo plug can cause bent valves

these are belts. have checked all belts and their fine.
Last service was 10k ago
First thing, check timing and rule that out.

A small piece of broken piston flying around will make a hell of a racket.
But check timing , do all the simple things first,
Could even put some vacuum gauges on to see whats up
BTW what motor and how many Ks on the clock
Its a TB42 carbie and its just ticked over to 280 000.
Hope its nothing major, 2nd hand motor would be cheap if its no good
Would timing really be an issue making that big racket? means i have to but everything back together enough to start the car then take it all apart again. Is it worth my time? if it is i'll do it, but i don't want to have to keep assembling the car and taking it apart again. id rather just go the whole hog and take it all apart till i find whats wrong with it.
Now, how far down into the engine can i go before i should fully remove it to work on it? and if i can keep it in the car, how far can i go down before all the fluids have to come out and fuel lines need to be plugged ect...
First check timing and timing components, then do compression test, this will tell you where to look.
If it's a valve problem the motor can stay in.
Other than that, it's easier to work on it on the bench.
If the head needs to come off, drain water and oil.
The engine has a valve problem by the sound of it when starting.

what sort of compression should i be expecting? cant seem to find it in the service manual or im not looking for the right thing.
Don't worry about optimum (130 to 175 PSI) cranking pressure at the moment, just do a compression test and see if each cylinder has the same or within say 5 or 10lbs, I feel you will find one cylinder has a VERY low reading..

i could, but it would chew through fuel and being an apprentice, i'm not going to have the most amount of money for fuel any time soon. but that would definitely be on the cards for the future.Quote:

Not sure if anyone remembers this but i finally got around to taking the pistons out of the engine. All it was was a shattered compression ring on number 4 cylinder.
You probably have a problem with the actuator, which is the ticking sound you are hearing.You will need to remove the radio and the left hand(drivers) sound insulator to access the actuator. It has plastic gears that break over time, and clicking sound is the motor trying to move the blend door.
