hi guys im new to the 4x4 scene but absolutely love it. just need some advice on a conversion im doing..?
i have a gq swb patrol and i am doing a rb30 block with rb25 head and cam conversion. the block and heads getting machined bored and balanced atm with forged pistons on its way. my question is what kind of turbo would you recommend with this setup???
That's a very open question mate.
What sort of power are you looking at?
What sort of boost are you wanting to run?
Intercooled?
What is the vehicle going to be used for?
There are many options available for the RB series motors. Also maybe a skyline or VL commodore based forum could be a lot of help also.
sorry im still new to it all but im looking at making about 300 hp and i just want to tear up the dirt and climb up dunes but also be able to smoke it up on road...

Why did you decide on doing a 25 head conversion ?, a RB30 single cam would do everything you want it to do !
You are fitting aftermarket pistons, and your fitting a machined 25 head, have you worked out what compression ratio you will end up with ?
With your forward plenum, is it to suit a XF Throttle body or standard (or other) and are you going aftermarket ECU ?.
And are you talking 300hp @ flywheel or tyres, and are you using a auto or manual gearbox ?
What is your budget ?
Im afarid choosing a Turbo is not always that simple ,if you want the right Turbo, there are a thousand questions that need to be answered first, can you talk to the engineer about these things , perhaps he can explain things and help you to get what you want/need rather than us "guessing" ?
Most of these RB28 hybrids ( 30 block / 25 head ) run T3/T4 in VL's. When i was doing a turbo conversion on my vl i had the option of having that combo, just the standard rb25 head with a small port and polish on the rb30 block with 30 thou oversize pistons was a 800 hp combo with the correct cams ( sorry can't remember which cams i was recommended to get) . You could also run a T04z but it will be a little bit laggier than the T3/T4.

someone actually recommended using a garret gtx 3076 is that bigger than the t3/t4 i think im still gonna be using stock cams from the rb25
i think my mechanic said he was waiting for all the porting and that to be done by engineer and getting all the compression ratio and all that from him first but i am impatient lol and wanted to get turbo and all that ready so when the block and that comes back its ready to be put together.
but also a guy from c-red in perth said that any more than 300 hp and i prob be blowin gearboxes and stuff but he said at 300 i will have a fun reliable every day car... any different views on this would be much appreciated??
plus would also like anyones opinion on an aftermarket computer to use toooo im such a newb so sorry if these questions are a bit how should i put it "dumb questions" its prob common knowledge for most of you all lol...

The OP goals are realisitic goal (at 300hp) and will be a very usable figure for a patrol. Research is key here though as the setup will be a little different to that of a street car. A build like this should be well thought out and built accordingly. There is a vast difference between something that is built and something that has just got bolt on add ons. Im not claiming to know a lot about these motors but time taken now will see you very satisfied.
There was an article on a rb30 GQ in a 4wd action mag about 2 years ago. Sorry I can't remember much other than it was black lol. It may have had a big "mannel motors" sticker down the side. It ran two computers so could be switched between full power or a bit more economy mode. It had something like 220kw at the wheels on 37s........
Yeah it was in a shorty. The lower tune gave him 285hp at wheels (210kw). I think on the higher tune it would do about 330hp or so.Quote:

I think im goin to go wit the gtx3071r with the tial 0.63 housing haltech ps2000 ecu and maybe either a tial 38mm or turbosmart 38mm wastegate. anyone know which wastegate is better. and what ya reckon about the setup??
What i know about the GTX style turbos is that the compressor wheel has been re designed to spool up faster and produced more stable boost. I've heard good things about the tial wastegate but saying that most of older tuners use them coz they have been around for a while, personally i have a 38mm turbosmart pro gate which i have yet to fit up to my toy but from memory flowed more that the tial and was a bit more compact. From experience i had a Malpassi FPR that couldn't cope with my fuel system but soon as i fitted up the Turbosmart unit i haven't had any problems since plus they're aussie made.Quote:

If your looking for a factory performance tuned ECU for EPA Reasons keep an eye out for a Nismo Mines ECU, they have different fuel trim maps from the standard with deleted fuel cut off speed limiter and the 12psi boost cut off that the standard ecu has.
Yeah I prob gonna go with an aftermarket ecu straight out cause if I get bored with the trol which I doubt would be ever but then I want to create a sick drifter so I wont have to purchase one later you know what I mean so u recommend going with the turbo smart wastegate but I found a tial 38mm with screamer pipe in gumtree for 250 wat u think
If you want a cheap drift car just get a S13 and fit a stock rb20det in it, i've had mine skating at 140km/h lol ( thats not my toy tho :) ) the wastegate i recommend you go new coz if it faulty you will loose your money if it second hand. Personally i don't like screamer pipes coz it sounds like a big air leak and i would have it plumbed back into the zorst for 2 reasons, 1 i don't want flames under my car to light up say a oil leak, and 2 you could start a fire when your offrd. So its really up to you tho which way you want to goQuote:

They certainly do. I fitted a gtx3071 with a t3 flange not long ago. Have a look at atpturbo.com heaps on there mate and really good prices. Most stuff is delivered in less than 7 days.Quote:
