Possible Turbo Trouble, anyone know a good patrol mechanic in perth!?

Gday everyone after buying a Patrol a few months back I've taken it for a run, and came home with an oil leek from my turbo, both the oil in and oil out seals were practically non existent (upon inspection no oil was found to be leaking into the air system), after having that fixed i took it out again, over Avon weekend in some very hilly terrain and found it to be sluggish as a granny on a zimmer frame. on my way home from the camp site, the engine reached its operating temp and then the engine light came on and it seemed to me that the turbo stopped working all together, it was then seriously sluggish, it would take for ever to get to 100km/h and im fairly concerned. once at 100km/h the engine seemed to slow down and then speed up buy about 5 km/h on the flat straight hwy (i was using the cruise control)

so can anyone give me an idea of what im looking at here, and if anyone can suggest a mechanic in perth that specialise in patrols or someone that is seriously good and reasonably priced.

ive also spoken to the mechanic of the guy who i bought the car off, he did allot of work on it, doing a replacement long motor, replacement fuel pump and fuel chip basically a brand new motor, and he had suggested to the guy that the turbo be replaced and the intercooler aswell, as the intercooler had a leak, im not sure if the turbo or intercooler have been replaced. but im starting to think probably not, just patched up and flogged off to me.

What year ,need all the info, First off I'd disconnect the Battery, Remove the engine cover and check all hoses to make sure they are tight,
You haven't mentioned if you have NADS fitted as it may well be going into limp mode from over boosting, is it billowing heaps of black smoke???

Sorry mate its a 2003 gu Di, no NADS fitted yet as the money i keep allocating for it keeps getting spent on trying to figgure this turbo out. it doesnt seem to be billowing any smoke once in limp mode. the only smoke i see is a puf of grey smoke when i start the car.

ive just removed the engine cover and theres oil residue all over the front end of the intercooler, so it would seem that the intercooler has not been replaced, as the mechanic said it was leaking... and there doesnt seem to be any loose hoses

Cool next I'd be cleaning the MAF sensor. SCA sell maf cleaning spray
You might try fitting a catch can first to stop all the oil residue.
I'm of opinion you need to fit NADS asap to control boost and therefore EGTs.
Seems you can't hold boost, so a change over intercooler maybe in order

ok so i looked up how to check fault codes ect, and the last stored fault is 0707 Injection Pump injection timing control what does this mean?

i do know one thing... i know warranty will cover this issue! WEEEEEEEW!!!!!!

Clear the codes, if you can, and see if the same one returns.

Sounds like the car has gone into limp mode, as I have had that on mine, and it would cruise at 100, but if you hit a hill, it would die in the butt.

Mine was nearly good as gold once I turned the key off and restarted. Now I've fixed my problem totally, it is all back to normal, and is as good as gold.

It could be a whole host of things, but there are a lot of faults and reports that I have read that say it could be one of the following :

A leaking Intercooler will result in power loss.
The Turbo Actuator is stuck
The MAF
Split Hose or hose come off from the turbo to the intercooler.

Check the basics first, before you jump to any conclusions....

Cheers Mic, will look into all of the above, i do know that the intercooler is leaking for sure and i will be replacing that as soon as i have exhausted all other avenues, although it did not start doing it until i had the seal replaced in my turbo. since then its done it 3 times, and im too affraid to drive it anywhere else but the mechanic.

how did you fix your problem mic? mine sounds almost exactly the same, as soon as i turn the car off and it cools down i turn it back on and its fine until it gets to optimum temp and then the engine light comes on, and it goes into limp mode.

ok i cleared the fault, and went for a drive until the engine faulted again, same code, 0707, except this time it did not go into limp mode.

My Turbo Actuator Rod by accident :icon_bonk: when the exhaust system was changed....not the fault of the car at all.

It still did a double Simpson crossing before I diagnosed the problem...

The fault description is:

0707 Fuel Injection Timing Control System
Circuit malfunction, Injection Pump Control Unit failure, Poor fuel quality.

The manual says that:
Injection control system does not function properly. It is a feed back system, so makes adjustments and then needs to see the changes. It could be a wiring fault, pump or pump ecu fault, poor fuel quality or restricted fuel supply system.


Check your Fuel Filter also, to see if this is OK, as it may be partially blocked which causes this fault....

ok so after a few days of phone calls i have some new theories to check when i return from work. an injector pump specialist said that the 0707 fault can often be caused by injector lines being loose and sucking air (apparently a pretty common thing with the patrols) and also told me to check the return line to the pump (it runs through the manifold apparently????) also 0707 can be tripped by the crank sensor so if anyone has any idea about the crank sensor and where it is and how to check it and clean it if necessary? i would much appreciate that.

also after talking to the mechanic for a while the only symptom he has to suggest my turbo needs replacing is the fact that the leak coming from the intercooler was an oily residue, i spoke to MTQ in malaga (turbo specialists) and they have said that the fact the engine is not blowing any smoke then he doubts the residue is from an internal turbo seal, his reasoning was when a car is doing 3000rpm the turbo is doing about 20000 so when things like that go wrong with the turbo you will definitely know about it.

outcome at this stage, check injector lines, and crank sensor, if fault still occurs i will take it to mechanic to check for faulty wiring and anything else they may suggest. then i will fit pyro and boost gauge and monitor, fit catch can and monitor, fit dawes and needle valve and monitor, and to top it all off fit the cross country intercooler i ordered today and see how that all travels.


also i have another question, what is the container that is underneath the air intake pipe that is attached to the air intake on the outside of the pipe in between the MAF sensor and the crank case breather return? it looks like the solenoid that the boost control system bypasses is mounted to the outside of it??????

UPDATE***** for anyone that comes across this thread in the future for a similar problem...

so i took the car to Robson Brothers 4x4 (absolute professionals that know what they are doing, and ask so many questions to get an idea of what was going on. im so happy with them, their service, and communication)
they nit picked through the engine, and came to a conclusion it would need a new fuel pump, but knowing it had only been replaced 10000km previous they looked further and wider for days to try and find something else. they ended up changing the oil filter to a genuine nissan filter, and also found allot of oil in the ecu connections, they then went through all of the connections replacing some, and cleaning all of them after an oil leek problem had wreaked havoc on all the connections. so now the engine is pretty much sweet, i just need to replace the intercooler due to holes in the core from the engine cover vibrating on the intercooler. so bring on the cross country cooler.

Good to hear that's the problem has been found mate........ I've heard nothing but good things said about Robson Bros. If I had the dough, I'd just take my GQ to them and say, knock yourselves out fellas get it all spick n span
