What are the TD28's compared like to the TD42?

Hey all, I'm currently looking into buying a GQ, and as you all know its hard to get your hands on the TD42's these days since everyone wants to keep them ;p I was wondering what the TD28 are like? In terms of power or reliabiblity? and of corse we cant expect much out of a 4 cylender...... I rarely tow trailers or anything like that, Ill be using it as my everyday/hardcore 4wd/tourer truck more than anything... But obviously the choice would be the 4.2 if I can get my hands on one... Haha
And I've had the EFI before but daym those things suck fuel like cray o.O

Let me know of what y'all think....

The GQ's had an rd28 in them which is a turbo 6 cylinder diesel. They aren't fast by any means but are still alright. They are known for head issues so look for one with a good service history.

Actually its an RD28 and they are a little Six mate ;)

They do well and are reliable, tune up well and you would be happy with it. Not a TD42T though but still a diesel.

The 4.2 EFI love the juice but leave the rest in standard form for dead ........
I personally wouldn't touch anything less than 4.2 L, but your budget will determine what you can or cant get
Even a TD42 with small boost,still isn't much of a match for the 4.2 EFI ......

Take it your not interested in a Dual fuel GQ, bit cheaper to run and initial cost cheaper too.
Whatever you buy I would imagine most problem are already sorted.
Once you get your butt in seat you'll be right I'm sure

You should be able to find a GQ 4.2 Diesel fairly easily, and the prices seem to dropped a little too.

I have never driven the 2.8 and they could be OK, but I can't imagine them being as good as my old 4.2.....

I would hold off until you find a 4.2 cause you will get in a 4.2 one day and you will be disappointed with yours. the 2.8 is reliable but doesn't have the diesel grunt you will bee looking for (just seams like it not all there).

I have just bought a 4.2 diesel last week and i'm glad that i spent a bit more and got what i wanted. In my opinion save up more or wait till one becomes available and get a 4.2.

I have had my td 4.2 turbo for six months it is a power house but i cant see how a td28 can give similar results for pulling such a heavy vehicle, i have been through some soft sands and i was very glad to have the 4.2 at the time. If your gonna get a GQ get the best sort TD 4.2 with turbo

My RD28T does a pretty decent job. I can't however compare it to a 4.2, as they don't have those here :(

They are however, as someone already stated, known for their weak heads, so should you choose to buy one, do take that into account (good service history, no abuse etc.)..

Personally I'd try and save a little bit longer and be a bit more patient to seek out a td42. Would be much better in the long run with possibly lower maintenance costs. The RD28 equipped patrol doesn't have the same "truck" like gearbox, and the heads can be prone to going. Which if one of these happened to you after buying the RD28, then you're probably at the same costs as the TD42.

I have a GU TD42t, and I'm glad I spent the little bit of extra time looking around - has been reliable and an absolute pleasure to drive.

Um, like previously said, spend the extra bit of coin on a 4.2.

We bought a 1997 RX RD28 and regretted it. If you're towing at all steer clear of the smaller 2.8, 4.2's win in that area.
The 2.8's have a weak fifth gear and is not suited for towing anything bigger than a small box trailer with a very "light" load.

I had to replace our cylinder head once and radiator twice, because of the cracked head.
After buying ours, the bottom end had to be rebuilt because of the harmonic balancer/crank issue which is common on these engines.

If its for playing on the weekend and a daily driver, or trips without heavy loads or trailers, this would be a suitable truck. Other than that I will never recommend a 2.8.

Also bear in mind the mechanic you take it to plays a HUUUUUUUUGGGGEEEEE part in how reliable a truck fares, we found out the hard way via multiple issues and now have a TD42 residing where the 2.8 sat.
The 2.8 has been retired to our garage! Until I sort out what to do with it.
