GQ TB42 Could loose pre-cleaner to air filter set up contribute to my auto woes?

Hi, I've got a GQ auto on dual fuel. Been having some issues with the auto recently. No lock-up in top gear mainly, causing excessive fuel consumption and running hotter than usual. I do quite a bit of highway driving and have to stay on 90kphto keep things cool and the revs down.

After a few minor drama's, have changed the trans oil/filter and refilled to correct level. Renewed oil cooler hoses. Removed and flushed radiator, renewed hoses and clamps. Cleaned carby and made adjustments neccessary.

Thought I'd remove the air cleaner-snorkel-precleaner assembly to clean and check rubber seals,etc. Found that it was all quite loose, rubber seals perished or missing, clamp on pre-cleaner missing.

Is this a likely contributor to my auto woes? I love this forum, and I've learnt so much since joining up. Thanks to everyone who's been patient when assisting a no-nothing like myself.

I highly doubt it would be contributing to your auto problems mate, Sounds to me the Torque Converter is not locking and this could be caused by numerous things, I posted a step by step on what to check and in what order in another thread a while back, Bare with me and I will see if I can find it.

Have you ran the Diagnostic Mode????

I know you have already seen this post in the other thread so it won't be new info 2 you but this is how it is listed in the GQ manual for testing

I have listed some of the manual page numbers, sorry but way much info to copy.

If you don't have or don't want to download the full GQ manual let me know and I can just put the transmission section on here for you to download

1-8 you can Test with gearbox in, lucky last number 9 transmission needs to be removed

Test in order as follows.

1) Throttle Sensor ( Adjustment ): AT32 ( Page 32 )

2) Revolution Sensor and Speed Sensor:

Revolution Sensor Test: AT-69 ( Page 69 )
Speed Sensor: EL-54 ( Page 54 )

3) Inhibitor Switch: AT-68 ( Page 68 )

4) Engine Revolution Sensor: AT-39 ( Page 39 )

5) Fluid Temperature Sensor: AT-69 ( Page 69 )

6) Line Pressure: AT-69 ( Page 69 )

7) Lock Up Solenoid: AT-69 ( Page 69 )

8) Control Valve Assembly

9) Torque Convertor

Yeah, Thanks Toddie. I have seen and saved your things to check/test list, very helpful.

I've got the Nissan GQ workshop/service manual, as well as a couple of others, but I think that's the one you're referring to. Just reading through auto section again now.

first time I heard about 'diagnostic mode' was on this site. It's my first Patrol and I knew nothing about them. No owners manual came with the vehicle so unaware about diag mode. My light may be blown as I've never seen it flash. I removed the trim to check the bulb and it looked ok but I couldn't get it out of the fitting.

anyway, I seem to be repeating myself, always coming back to this auto prob. I'm pretty sure a transmission specialist could spot the problem and fix it easily (maybe), but I'd still like to try and fix it myself. Not just for the dollars saved, but I'm learning so much about the GQ in the process. It's very satisfying, but I can only perservere for so long.

Does the converter lockup at all, under any circumstances for example when coasting at 100 down a bit of a long hill?

How many k's on the trol? Do you know if the torque converter has be replaced before?
Definately good to follow Todds checklist but i reckon it may be time for a reco torque converter

Thanks for that. Yeah, seems be fine except for top gear. Used to lock-up at 90 - 100kph from memory, now when I cruise down the highway it feels like it's on the verge of it, but doesn't happen. Auto will kick down no problem.

It's got 516,000k's on it, very few of those are mine. I bought it a few years ago, but I left it with a family member who only drove it occasionally - became my main vehicle about 6 months ago.

I remember the guy I bought it off was a 'commercial traveller' (sales rep) who used it as his work vehicle. It was really tidy and straight when I first got it, but hasn't been parked undercover for a few years. Still pretty good nick though.

So wouldn't know about any work done before I got it (I'm assuming regular servicing was done though).

What a rough price for a reco torque converter?

"top gear" is the converter locking up. The converter wont lock up in any other gear.
A reco TC should be around $700? and probably around another $700 fitting. That is my local price here in tassie but i reckon it would be cheaper on the big island

yeah, I realise that - I was saying that was the problem, and the auto seems fine otherwise.

I'll try not to drive with it in this condition for too long, and start to look for a reco TC I guess....

Yeah, I paid $1600 all up for an exchange reco torque converter fitted, with an extra hour or two labour spent on another thing at the time

Yeah that's the beauty of living in tas! Would have been cheaper in launy or Hobart. I think I may have got a heavy duty TC though

Bought a new Bosch GT40r coil and fitted it.
I had my TPS off today, gave it a good soaking in WD40 (sprayed in every gap I could find), and cleaned it with a 'modified' soft bristled toothbrush and dental pik. Let it drain and dry out, and put it back on with a slight adjustment. All the connections got a spray and good clean as well.
Holy crap, what a difference it made! So smooth between gears, and smoother to drive in general. TC still not locking up, but so much better.

Going to book it in with my gas guy for a decent tune-up, and then I'll start pricing reco-ed TC's. Definitely gonna get an oil cooler for the transmission as insurance for the future.
