Are there any descendants of the culture who created the petroglyphs left who still value them in their culture today? Like you say I think it best the petroglyphs be left where they are for others to discover. Similar to Aboriginal sacred sites here. I have walked in some very special places where artifacts thousands of years old were just lying around on the ground, & skeletons of the 'old people' were occasionally seen, exposed by the wind & rain. The 'rule, with all of these was was to not disturb them as they form part of t he songlines which connect today's culture with all that has gone before, back to the beginning of time.
