Pertronix Problem

Ive just fitted a pertronix ignitor2 electronic ignition module paired with the flamethrower2 coil.
On start up it idles fine but as the engine warms up it starts missing. The hotter the engine gets, the worse it misses. Leave it overnight and start again and it runs perfect till it starts warming up.
I fitted new leads and plugs. Ive triple checked the wiring and fitting instructions. None of the wiring heats up (as in shorting out).

A mate fitted the exact same kit to his maverick and it works fine.

Any ideas to what is wrong? Could the module be faulty?
My brother mentioned that in other cars they put a bit of heat proof grease under the module to stop it heating up too much but the pertronix kit doesnt mention anything about it and my mates runs fine without it.

On the good side, even missing and carrying on like it is its already using less fuel and has more power:)

to me it still sounds like a wiring issue I know you have checked it but how do you check looking or continuity checks? I would get the meter out and check continuity you may have a dodgy termination

Havent checked the continuity. Car was running fine before i fitted the ignitor and there are only two new wires that come from the module that go to positive and negative of the coil. What do you mean by dodgy termination? should i just check the continuity of all the wiring?

there would be lugs or crimps on the cable? they might not have been crimped correctly. yes I would check all for continuity, if they are all good it could be a faulty module

the instructions say to by-pass the balast resistor. I bypassed it and joined the wires but i didnt solder them. Could that be a problem?

how did you join them??

I joined them like this. I thought that it would be as good as the original join onto the ballast resistor.

Sounds like a component breaking down as it heats up. Could be a faulty module.

I have been in contact with the seller. He has sent me some PDF instructions about how to test the module and the coil. He also suggested that it sounds like the coil was faulty and to fit my old coil and see if the problem goes away. Ive just refitted my old coil and ballast resistor (lucky i didnt solder the wires together) and will test it out tomorrow.

I put my old coil back in (and ballast resistor) and drove to work this morning. No change. As the engine warms up, it starts missing. The hotter it gets, the worse it misses. So I've got original coil and ballast resistor, brand new leads and plugs. It must be the module then ?

You're really not having much luck with this pertronix from start to finish are ya Lucas.

Did you fit the ignitor to your distributor In situ or did you pull it out? Maybe your vacuum advance hose on the dissy has a leak or has come unattached inside the dissy? Did you regrease the governor weights under the breaker plate in the dissy (could they be sticking/not freely moving)?

I know they're simple things but hopefully we can solve this easily.

Yeah sounds like a doozy. Perhaps it's just the auto choke in the carbi compensating until it has warmed up? Then after its got to temp you start missing because it's running leaner? I think you can dial back the auto choke on the side of the carbi to prove if this is the case or not.

Also what gap did you set from the dissy shaft to the pertronix?

And before I go to much further did you get the lobe sensing or hall effect model (I think the pertronix 2 is hall effect only, you would've had to machine the shaft down.)

Nah it's a real bad spark break down. There's no way the choke could compensate for it. And the auto choke normally goes off after 2 or so minutes, spark doesn't start missing for 10 to 15 minutes.
The gap is set with the spacer supplied.

Haha always the case with these things, have you had a chance to speak to pertronix also I vaguely remember a troubleshoot booklet coming with mine.

Try fitting your old spark plugs and leads back on and eliminate the new ones as the fault, just in case. What leads did you use, gas needs low ohm leads. Once again sorry if I'm stating the obvious just thinking aloud.

I had the original leads and plugs on when I fitted the pertronix but because it was missing I first fitted new leads (as there was visible sparking under the bonnet at night!) but that didnt fix it so then I fitted new plugs which also made no improvement, so I then refitted my original coil (and ballast resistor) and still no difference! If the wiring was wrong then you'd think it would have the miss all along instead of slowly getting worse as the engine heats up.

Bummer, your doing all the right fault finding, if you were in vic id let you come round and swap my pertronix into your dissy and see if that is the problem. Maybe go round your mates place with a slab and suggest the idea, haha. Short of that maybe put the points and condensor back in the dissy and see if it goes well, if it does then thats proof the pertronix is at fault.

lucky you are able to do the work yourself and not paying by the hr.
Sounds like replace pertronic II going by what you have done sofar.
reinstall point is the final step to confirm problem.

I did the test last night and as far as me and my mechanic mate could see, it showed that the module was faulty. The seller said that they will replace the item so ill be sending it off monday.

Ah well atleast you've gutted it out now mate. These things are sent to test us.

then you'll loose spark and i'll tractor past you at 1200rpm. giving you the royal wave. then possibly the finger........ no definatly the finger hahahahahahahaha

haha yeah ok, but the spark issue was mod not a breakdown, i just got a faulty module.

No rockcrawling around here... just the most awesome "red mud" that you've ever seen! The diesels need to be boosted and revved hard around here:) Ya should come for a trip:)

Sorry to hear you've had dramas mate. I've run this exact combo for a few months now and it has been fantastic. Hopefully the new one will be good to go for years!

Im sure I have read a few post re the pertronix ignitor2- they are know to play up. When the work the are great but.

Theearlier ignitor isa suposed to be more reliable - but not as effective as the pertronix ignitor2
