Internal Snorkel mod.

Decided it was time to make a snorkel for the Trol. I just don't like any of these massahoosive external ones that go ALL the way down the wing plus they're stupidly expensive:/
So how hard can it be ? :icon_bonk:
Bought some 3" silicone hose off fleabay in sexy black 2m long £38 :clapping:
Then set about cutting up the air filter housing as follows:

So next job, drill a dirty great 85mm hole in the bulkhead where these holes are

To make a nice collar through the bulkhead I found this in me garage It's a 4" soil pipe adaptor for a 1 1/2" waste pipe, ideal

Here it is in place ready to drill the b/h so I can bond it in place

I drilled a big hole in this too so the air intake will fit through it a bit like this

So as that worked so well I bonded it in place with Tiger seal and a few screws to hold it in place till the goo cured. That'll be totally water proof in an hour or so

Next the air filter box needs some modifications Basically cut off the bend bit and then cut off the square end, as that bit will be in a new position on the box.

Then I grafted on the square bit onto the box and riveted it in place , again using tiger seal to seal it all up.

Then I cut a bit of old tread plate to blank off the old intake hole. Again, rivets and tiger seal do the business

Refit the filter box back on the Trol

Next stage will be the silicone hose connection and then routing it through the dash and up the A post.
It'll then go onto a roof scoop made out of a bonnet scoop like a scooby or similar :)

Right then , did a bit more today and got the inside sorted pretty much. Took out the glove box and the grab handle in readiness for hole cutting :clapping:

With the air vent out and working from under the dash, there's just enough room for an 80mm hole It does get close to the grab handle but not too much.

Again much filing and smoothing required so you don't damage you pipe :redface: Then gently insert your pipe into the hole a little wriggle and twist a bit , then ahhh it's in :devilred:

Pull it through slowly so it can be passed above all the heater blower gubbins and then carefully out the B/H collar . Then you get this the other side .

Back in the glove box zone I got a suitable zip tie to hold the ducting up out the way of the heater controls and keep a nice gentle curve.

Then the glove box innards need to be trimmed a bit to allow for the ducting, didn't loose too much of it, still room for man things :drunk:

The ducting is now up the A post and zip tied to the roof till I can get to the scrap yard and liberate a bonnet scoop. Got the exposure all wrong but you get the drift.

I dunno about anyone else but there is so much wrong here.

1 - you cut threw your firewall... Compromised the integrity, and a massive defect..

2 - you ran it inside the cab!!! What happen when the thing back fires?? Or a valve sticks open slightly.. It's a highway to disaster..

And 3 - how the f does that look better than the snorkel along the 1/4????

1 Aye, just the same as heater hoses, wiring loom, air con etc ?

I'm sorry, but that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. I'm not sure where you are from, but if I did that in Australia I think I would not pass a registration check.

I can see nothing wrong with the normal snorkel fitted on the outside of any 4x4.

In fact diesels are all about getting clean fresh air and plenty if it. I really think you will be restricting the amount of air intake

I hope your going to keep it for a while, because I don't think anyone would ever buy it from you.

This Member is in Wales UK and does not have the same ADR restrictions that we have here nor does he have access to ANY of the after market off the shelf stuff that we have in every shop we go to in Australia. His specialty is Outside the Box.

I agree i am not a big fan and when looking at it i have to say the Turbulence noise through that hose inside the cab will be massive Loud! If you have a Turbo it could be wicked though! ;) If you have a Turbo i soooooo want to here it spool from inside on a Audio track please!!

Interested to see how you finish it off mate.

You guys need to chill. If your concerned about legalities of a air intake through the cab call david metcalfe at extreme 4x4 sport and ask him where his went. He had a registered and fully legal and engineered comp truck that as I said legal to drive on road. His snorkel/air intake was a 4" pipe that run through the cab on the passenger side floor and out the back wall of the cab to a snorkel head at the back. I have been in this car while driving on the road and at first didnt know what this pipe was lol. Its a good idea and I think it cleans up the engine bay quite nicely and if this was a roll cage bar then it would run basically in the same spot. Keep up the work mate.

I have seen this on another forum on a TD42 running in excess of 200hp in a GU. The only difference is I think he has just run it into the cab and it stops where it come through the firewall. The owner reckons it was loud as with the turbo drawing so much air he put a filter on it which apparently quietened it down a bit. MR im pretty sure a member of said forum have a look I think at tye1986 build thread on patrol 4x4.

yea not for my gu but if i had a gq sure id cut it up, id love to hear it spool up incab also ! looking forward to seeing the scoop nice work mate good to see someone doing something diffrent.

I've done this mod on my old Nisaan Terrano, and that was turbo charged. It does make a nice drone in the corner of the truck but not obtrusive at all. Remember the intake will be a scoop on the roof as on Subaru Impreza for example. The silicone pipe , although flexible, it's still pretty hard to bend and relatively smooth inside. The new route in is now nice and smooth compared to the stock Patrol intake box in the wing and then the twists and turns into the filter box. I'll be doing a pressure test when I finish it so I'll be able to give you guys an empirical answer to how much drag there is in the pipe compared to the stock intake ;)
This is also legal in the UK and listed on my insurance modifications list.

Hey mate, good on ya for trying something a little outside the box. I have an old MQ swb that we were thinking of doing the same to. We were just going to end it with a pod filter inside the glovebox as it's only a toy and not registered. I personally love the look of my custom external stainless steel snorkel. I copied ABs thread here but only made mine 3 inch. I look forward to seeing the roof scoop. Keep up the good work:-)

Well done on having a go. Each to there own for sure, but I have to agree that it looks awful. Wouldn't work in OZ anyway as my GQ lets all the bull dust into the cabin anyway so still wouldn't get fresh air LOL. What does it sound like? Any roaring from air sucking? Again for OZ (dust) I wouldn't let go of the primary filter for quids.

hes not done yet and it still has a filter so what little dust would be in the cab would still be alot less then stock

I think it's a pretty cool mod, I'd have one myself if you didn't have to have the tube run through the interior. Roof vent should look awesome!

Got home early ish tonight and found a delivery from fleabay :clapping:
It's the air scoop I ordered for 12 quid , actually a brakes air duct.
So time to cut the roof open that's the air intake on the left.
Masked around the area to cut after checking inside first. There's a roof reinforcer just in front of the marked area, and also one of those wire things that holds up the roof lining. So that's where it's going then :shivering:

Then I filed the edges smooth before fitting the air intake moulding from inside the roof with lashings of Tiger seal then a bunch of screws to hold it in place till the goo cures . Takes about 24 hours in northern hemisphere temperatures :frown:

So the roof scoop bit will follow ,weather permitting, soon. In the meantime I connected the ducting and went for a quick spin and really pleased it's not noisey at all I can still hear the tyres easily lol

In the firewall or bulkhead as you called it, where you cut out the hole those 2 smaller holes were was that for a/c or the heater ? 2. Are you going to dress the ducting tube inside the cab? 3. Are you going to cap the snorkel so it doesn't fill up with water/ snow ?Personaly i would have made it out of stainless steel and used mandrel elbows or intercooler hose but each to their own and good on ya bud.

Yep when it's all clipped in and finalised it'll be dressed, not sure what with yet, waiting to see what the garage pixies find next :)
Stainless would have been the mutz for sure but bloody expensive. That's pretty much why I'm doing it this way really, snorkels for the Trol cost over 200 quid here. Intercooler hose again nice but still pricey. This stuff is pretty smooth to be fair and as I found out tonight it's quiet, no turbulence evident.
Sunroof works fine, it's a simple lift up jobbie.
When the roof scoop is on and blended in it'll be stealth snorkel .
As for rain and snow , well yes it will go in but I've got a water drain gland to fit to the Nissan plastic intake pipe in the engine bay, just at the firewall, as that's the lowest point. It's a standard Nissan rubber thing that lets water out but not air in. Got one off a Nissan Terrano air box.

Wow i just got my eyes around how you have that scoop. that is mounted "Hanging" inside the car! so your going to put a nice external roof scoop on to it. Look forward to seeing the scoop.

We are looking into the Inside that double scoop.

I had an aborted mission to the scrappy the other day as no suitable scoops came to light :( Got a nice one for the intercooler mod, but that's another story.........
So I got this fiberglass copy off fleabay

It's too wide for my job but easily trimmed, so here's the cut n shut bit.
Just measured what I wanted to end up with and mr angle grinder does his magic. Lay one piece over the other and copy the cut again, simples.

Then spin it over and temporarily tape it together with gaffa tape or whatever.

Cut some strips of glass mat and mix up some resin/hardner and slip slop job done. Takes as long as a cup of coffee :smile:

Then it's off with the tape and on with a bit of gelcoat filler to tidy the join.

Sand until smoooooth then some obligatory black rattle can :xxxx:

I then offered it up to the bum hole in the roof :eck05: and marked where the bolts were to be drilled.
Then once roughly in place masked off the surrounding area. That's when the Tiger seal oozes out the sides I can finger it off ( oo er missus ?) to a nice smooth finish and THEN remove the tape leaving a nice finished edge :animierte-smilies-t in theory.............

Loads of goo round the scoop edge and on the bolt holes and stick it in place. tighten down the nuts so all the goo comes out the sides. Remove excess and then the tape. This is what I got so far :p

There is a hole at the back of the scoop so when driving in rain I'm hoping most of the water will go to the back and then out over the roof. Similarly there's another water drain gland at the low point in the engine bay. If it'll stop raining long enough I'll do pics of those too, enjoy :thumbup:

Yep, fitted one at the lowest point just by the bulkhead. It's pissing down here at the mo so field tests underway now :/

Would have looked better if it was sitting forward more but sunroof makes that impossible. I know I'd rather have the sunroof!

Ha ah I did have it in the cab just for a larf the other day, it sounded awesome but I was struggling to breath, :/ Damn 4.2 is a greedy beast lol
Not really too much sand here to worry about, and even the sand on the beach is suitably damped down by this bloody rain, arrgghhh !

At first I thought he was bringing it inside the cab to run cold air induction using the cold air from his air conditioning but there you go, good on you for trying something a little different to others.
