It's a camp oven lid remover/ face destroyer
close MEGOMONSTER, its a 7 in one kitchen/camping multi purpose tool.
It dates from the 1880's and was made in the states by a Mr HW Thayer.
Apparently it can be used for the following:
Lid removal
Bottle opener
Billy lifter
Stove top lifter
Trivett
Candle Holder (x2)
Camp Oven lid lifter
I saw it on ebay and just had to add t to my camp cooking kit.
Was thinking about taking it to a foundry and see if they can make a couple.
As far as I can tell they are no longer available in the states.
And my prize is...................
a slice of roast beef at our next country cook out,,,,,,,,,,, and some vege's to go with it!
Too slow to pick up on the biggest hint you gave.
Posted this thread in camping section.
If you get them made I'll buy one off you.
Looking into it, Ill keep you posted,,,,,
now that you mention it's uses, after going back and looking at the pic it makes sense with it's funky shape
I do a great roast beef, nothing to scoffed at!
good roasts do I make also
Hi BIGRIG cast iron sign as per PM
My very heavy homemade camp oven as well 32kg, but cooks like a dream
GOLD...love it :)
Easy one for some one.. whats this??????
wallaby trap?
Nah not a wallaby trap, and have more signs for sale, powder coated grey no white writing
butt scratcher,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,actually it looks a lot like a testical grabber!
BIG FELLA does your mate with the foundry do alloy???
You know nobody makes alloy/aluminium camp ovens at a reasonable price any more since NU STEEL closed.
Found an Aluminium camp oven from the states and even with $160 freight was much cheaper than the ones from here
we spoke about an aluminium camp oven during my visit, he has just purchased an other furnace to set up just for aluminium.
He was also looking into casting some camp ovens as none are made here anymore.
All come from China, even the good old Furfy Ovens are cast in China.
The biggest issue is price, the imported items are less than 50% the cost of locally cast.
Stupid, cause the shit iron they wont use they sell to the scrap merchant destined for China. You guessed it, they use the stuff we wont and send it back to us,,,,,,,,
There is a vast difference in quality, however getting the general public to appreciate a quality cast oven when they both do the same job is quite difficult!
Me, I will always buy the Aussie item if at twice the price. Guess Im just too proud of an Aussie to save my coin!
What about the health warnings with cooking in aluminium? or are they just old wives tales,,,,,,,
I'd say an ally camp oven is not a camp oven lol.
There is nothing as good as the good old cast iron ones, even a Chinese one would be better than ally IMO.
A freshly shot duck and a rabbit by the side of the road at Ayres Rock is hard ta beat, couple of spuds and an onion.....................
Cheers, the ferret.
Yo Ferret not saying they cook better they don't never will. the ones you can get in aust made in NSW i think are priced around the $300 mark which is ridiculus.
The one in the states was 12" and $80, more robust than cast iron and a lot lighter. We eat from aluminium all the time. well used to, was only because of cheaper materials
we don't now, plus we all still drink from aluminium with no ill effects, so far lol.
I know a few who will swear by their alloy camp ovens, just another option to cook with, other than the Bedourie or cast iron.
you would sell heaps of Alloy camp ovens, put up a poll as another thread?
the mob that did make them would even cast your name or logo in the lid for extra fee.
old wives tale about cooking with aluminium
Cheers mate, but I think I will stick to the old one, the older they get, the better they cook, just don't burn them LOL.
Cheers, the ferret.
Agree 100% can't beat cooking with well seasoned cast iron.
I only made that big oven for when we go fishing there are 6 of us.
This'll hold two roasts with all the fixing with ease. weight gets to be an issuse as well.
I make all our cooking items, a few to test next trip as well. I'm not tight just like making stuff
and most times works better than bought
Ya might have ta put some wheels on the oven threedogs, then ya can tow it!!!
Cheers, the ferret.
rabbit a little garlic and red wine, about 2.5hrs in the camp oven then throw in some washed potatoes some carrots maybe an onion slow cook for another 45 minutes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, drool drool drool,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Sure is a horse of an oven but once near the fire it doesn't move till time to pack up, no words for you bigfella but pic of a meal from last camp, only needed to be wrapped in foil and returned to heat for another 5 min, served with garlic bread slices. That pan just under 500mm wide too.
AWESOME simply AWESOME,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Wonder how many decent camp cooks there are, would love to see all the different cooking set ups?
You're not that far away to meet in the middle {halfway} one day
