Carbie problem ??

I was driving my Patrol and lost acceleration. at 1st it was just when going up a hill , then it became in general as I drove. It would not rev higher that 3000rpm. I pulled over, played around with carbie ( I am not Mechanically minded ) it was fine again until after sometime ie 20km it started it again, The NRMA tow me home it is ok at the moment but have only driven it a few km , but have driven up a hill no problem.
Prior to this happening, I changed the spark plugs, oil and fuel filter, i drove 300km or more , filled up at a small town servo drove another200km , 60kms of which was dirt, well mud as it was raining.
I thought it may have been the accelerator cable but the NRMA guy said no and that it was most likely something in the Carbie playing up.
Any ideas where I should start looking?

What engine?

check the fuel filter again - dirt or water may be blocking it, even though you replaced it not long ago. Look for other fuel filters that either Mr Nissan put there, or someone else added

If it is an engine with breaker points in the distributor, check the point gap has not closed up.

That's all I can come up with so far.

its a 3L petrol, 1990 model, it is white

yup it has Dizzy and points, both checking that and checking the fuel filter are on the top of my to do list.
the old fuel filter that i replaced on Thursday B4 it started playing up was full of crud.
was also thinking of replacing the air filter, (was planning to do that regardless of this issue) it does look like its done its job long enuff

sounds like you might be starving it of air, id change that filter first spray some throttle body cleaner through yer inlet while its running then run it hard down the freeway for 20min or so
that should at least rule that out

A mate (with the rb30) had the same problems as your describing for months. In the end all he did was spend a bit of time lubing up the outside of the carby with inox. Free up all linkages, paying special attention to the piece in the below photo. Pull the rubber boot out the way, spray inox and work the shaft up and down till it's free moving. (the photo us of a TB42 carb but the part is very similar. Hopefully this will help.

I checked the fuel filter , all good there
I was unable to check points since none of my 8mm sockets or spanners were small enuff to fit on the bolt to undo it.
air filter is on order.
I have driven it twice now and the problem hasn't reoccurred.
freeing up the carbie linkages sounds like it could be the go , when it 1st happened i played around with the carbie and the problem was fixed for a short period of time

I would be looking at your fuel filters, sounds like one is partly blocked. If you put you foot down, does it rev out then dies i.e staving for fuel

ALso check where the fuel enters the carby as there may be a little gauze ilter

The item on the left of the above photo -is the air cond idle control.

Inox will help if the carby is sticking

when I put my foot to the floor , nothing happened, it was reving at 3000rpm foot to the floor no increase in revs, changed down gear, max 3000rpm, the engine never died nor coughed or spluttered, it just didnt rev above 300rpm, which meant that when going up a hill it lost power and I had to crawl to the top of the hill , which really sux in a 110km zone and you are slowed down to 20km/hr and you have a further 500km to travel to get to where you are going NRMA saved the day but no mechanics were around to sort the problem out so it got towed home

I remember when my mums old Datsun Sunny was playing up and the mechanic in a small country town could not find the problem, it would idle but not rev.

I got up the next morning and went to have a go at it myself, as soon as I took the main drain bolt from the bottom of the float bowl I saw a tiny piece of clear plastic blocking the main jet.

I fired up the car and she ran perfectly, the car would sometimes run well then suddenly run like crud and it was because that bit of plastic would float around and then get sucked into the main jet block it and it would run horribly again.

It felt good finding the problem that was driving mum nuts for a while.

where would a second fuel filter be located ? the main 1 is new and i have checked that it is not blocked

So far My patrol has been running fine , have not been able to duplicate the problem again , still going though and checking and servicing any part that may have cause the issue.

i think i have found the problem, the air intake is from the inside of the front guard, i am lead to believe that their should be a plastic cover there, as it is missing , dirt , water and mud most likely got sucked into my air box, unable to find 1 at the local wreckers i made my own, so far i have traveled 700km , 200km of which is dirt and did 25 creek crossings. no more problems, will have to get me a snorkle soon though.

Yeah X 2 Nice work, most of the inner plastic guard panels are very brittle, don't know what Mr Nissan was thinking.
Bit of black spray and the jobs finished, but as stated a snorkel would solve any problems, I'll check where fuel filters are
for you.

I gave it a coat of black paint just after I took the pic, its not noticeable at all, i have one of those Tigerz11 ‏ $70snorkels in the mail now, should do the trick

ok wont hold it , but have been sent an email from them that it is in the post and with a tracking number from the delivery company

it has arrived, it is here, got me snorkel. now just got to work out how to fit it

up date, fitted snorkle a while back works great but the template that came with it was shit , had the problem again the other day, just out of the blue, finally replaced the throtle cable which i have had sitting in the back of the troll for to long , the old one was very frayed, runs much better now should have done it as soon as I got it , will what and see if it happens again

it has happened again, bugga, something must be sticking coz when I play around with the throtle cable and spray the carby with WD or the like it stops
got me scratching my head

HI mate,

I am having the exact same issue with my 3.0 Gq patrol at the moment. I have replaced, spark plugs and leads, cleaned carby, changed air filter, fuel filter and still having the same problem.
I have been told to check the fuel site glass on the carby straight away when it happens to see if the fuel is at half way otherwise it could be starving for fuel.

I will post here with my outcome, hope to fix this issue soon.

My rb30 had the same stuff happening when I bought it. I put it on a Dyno and was getting a whopping 30kw at the wheels. :( The Mechanic fiddled with the second stage butterfly. He found it was stuck shut. The engine immediately gave us 70kw. :) He advised me to take the carby off and have a go at the second stage with wet'n'dry. I found that the butterfly had worn a groove in the bore. I smoothed the butterfly and the bore. It took me quite a few goes to get it right, but persistence paid off. It has had no such problems, for over 12months.

Another thing I did was to refit the stove pipe and check that the flap works, as the carby would fail worse when cold.

Update:
OK, so I have replaced the Distributor cap and Rotor button on my GQ. The original one was pretty ratshit and suprised it threw any spark at all going by the condition it was in. Since replacing both parts I have not had any issue with loss of revs/power. Its been a week and considering before it would do it every time I drove it, I think I may have solved that issue... now onto the 100's other issues.

Hey Taslucas, I am still having issues with my carbie, problem only happens once iun a blue moon ussally when we are loaded up and going on a trip or an outing , the rubber boot in above photo is completely perish on my carbie, so my thinking is I need to get a new one. question is where? do I have to go to Mr Nissan for it?

I was having problems with mine untill it just started farting and cutting out.
Turned out the LPG had deteriorated the internals. Got them all replaced new seals/gaskets and tin components intead of the plastics. Had to get a body too as id somehow warped it, its been sweet since.

I did put a snorkel on recently and it when i got it retuned we discovered the lpg system didnt have a equalising pipe i think it was, so sometimes it would cut out when comin of the gas down a hill.
Got one fitted now it runs better than ever.

Are you running on LPG at all?

That part with the boot i think is your high speed idle. Kicks in when you turn your aircon on. I dont think that would be your problem
