Yeah well then....... ?
I use this one.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RAM-MOUNT...item2a441721ba
It does fall off the windscreen every now and then but for the most part it's bloody stable. I would suggest no to get one with a single suction cup and to get one with 2 or 3 suction mounts.
I can just change that part now though if I wanted to.
I'm new ish too, and have to say tablet is awesome! ! That last trip we did was great knowing exactly where you are and what not. . . Just got mine in a dick Smith special suction cap thingy above the dash but will make up a more permanent mount down the track. Don't trust the suction thingies too much. . .
I don't trust the suction things too but I got one off Ebay the same as Winnies but mounts as landscape. Miraculously the base of the mount can rest on top of the dash front part that houses the centre switches, stereo etc which gives it support and haven't had it drop off yet.
I have one and as long as it sits on the dash it is fine but as i have the pod holder in the center of the dash it needs to go over further blocking the passenger's view..
I have seen members on here who have them mounted lower but cannot remember who has them?

I've got one of these, it will never come off if put on correctly. There's another ball that screws on to the tablet holder ( Holds 10inch still in slimline case ) and then one of these to attach to the suction mount

All ram mounts.

First I bought this stuff $78

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps70ffa8b7.jpg
and then put it together for a bit of a dry run. Looks good :D

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psa278eb0a.jpg
Now where to mount it? I was keen for a stealth mounting solution, the last thing I wanted to do was cannibalise the dash, so I picked on the little cubby house storage pocket at the top of the dash with the flip up lid.
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pse9416906.jpg
Time now to rip the dash apart. Comes apart pretty easy actually.
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps704b021a.jpg
Now to mount the base to the back of the pocket. The RAM units are made out of high quality aluminium and feature a rubber coated ball which grips the arm very well. Luckily for me RAM decided to make the diameter of the base unit about half a millimetre smaller than the height of the back of the pocket, couldn't have designed it any better if you tried. Placed it in there and drilled some holes, then bolted it up with some 6x16 button head bolts and nyloc nuts.

Then reassembled the dash

Looks like it was meant to be there. Test fitted the arm and iPad holder
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7d252203.jpg
Perfect fit :D :D 8-)
Now to test it out, bring in the iPad
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps51948a8e.jpg
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...pse08f1ecb.jpg
Perfect fit. The base of the iPad is about 10mm in front of the silver pen tray on the dash and the arm rests on the base of the pockect to help hold the weight. It doesn't block the use/view of the radio and absolutely has zero impact on your forward vision, perfect location. It's as solid as a rock and doesn't move at all. Very pleased with the end result. 8-) 8-)
If you want it permanent BA and secure I would do what the lads have done above using a ram mount.
I have a ram mount on the satphone and the perfect spot to mount it on a gq is just on the right hand side of the oh shit bar. The satphone holder and phone does not move at all.
Ram mount brand is the best bar none. Don't stuff around with any crap. I bought the mount which bolts to your seat base and has a stalk on it. A bit bricey but I was sick of buying cheap flimsy chinese shite!

I didn't buy from this mod but here it is.
I just bought a Ram mount brand mobile phone holder too. I broke three yet again flimsy plastic crap before I decided to get the real deal.
Come over one day Jonathan and have a look. Its quality gear.
yep, another one for ram mount, mine was screwed down onto the dash in the old clunker (using exiting holes)
Yeah bugger... out of my price range.. i still owe some nob cash for parts ....lol
Might make my own ??
Heres mine i made for my Ipad Aid, used a Ram mount and made my own bracket out of steel off the seat mount. Holds very well with almost no movement
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...ght=ipad+mount
Mine is mounted the same as rocket55 but I just used self tappers thru the glove box, I didn't bother pulling everything out and mine is still there after 18 mths
Well done Rocket55..
you beat me to it, i got plans on doing the same thing,,
that is a perfect place for it..
all you need now is a USB socket next to the ball so you dont have wires running every where... that was my plan to do..
just one question for you.. what was the length of the arm???
Yeah I'm just thinking of making something up and adapting it to the cheapie I've got. Just make a bracket that will work with the jesus bar or screw into the dash (maybe) and screw into the cradle part. . . Get rid of the suction cap which reduces vision anyway. . . On my long list of things to do . . .
I see ram make a pipe clamp attachment which you would replace the suction cup with. You could clamp it around the Jesus bar.
Hi Mal, I took those pics a while ago and have since mounted a dual Narva USB plug on the left hand side of the pocket so it keeps all the wires in check. It works a treat. Here is the parts list I used.
http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2y3wio8r.png
I've also put a small piece of felt on the bottom side of the arm where it rest on the front edge of the pocket as it was starting to leave a tiny mark. No issues now. I've been off road many times with this from mild to relatively wild and driven all over the VIC HIgh Country and it doesn't move, vibrate or carry on. It just sits there as if it was a permanent fixture.
Check my write up of a RAM Mount with bigger balls (1.5") here. Didn't require pulling the dash apart. The set up has been tested over 15,000k of tough tracks, vibrates a bit on corrugations, else works well.
Just looking for new mounting options as my last one basically has melted on the windscreen and Ram Mount seems to be the one to use.
Those with the older GU dash, are you using the long double clamp to get it closer to you?. My present one is around 220mm from windscreen to basically edge of the dash. This way I can actually press it almost without taking my hands off the steering wheel.
Current holder (eBay):

Down here thats illegal mounting it on the centre of the Dash. still has me beat why you want/need these things.
Just look at a map, PPL are relying too much on electronics.
We made it to Cape York in 83 with just paper maps via the creb track.
and made it to Birdsville using the same , makes me laugh when I see stuff like this.
It it legal to even have them.................... I've seen the guys on All 4 adventure use there tablet
but its not bolted to the dash PML
to me its over complcating navigation. Surely as an eg you can get to Broome without a tablet to look at lol
waste of space,,,,,, wonder what would of happen to Billy if he had a tablet bracket sticking out of his dash.
Not a fan sorry
Any mod really needs a cert as you should know ,
Not asking for opinions ..... I just wanted pics of others ... mainly GQ's.
Not having another argument with an oldie about the good ol days and my Tom Tom is all I need.... each to there own.
Mine is literally Velcroed to the dash. Nothing sticking out and handles the bumps and what not fine.
Probably not suited to everybody but works for me. Handy to just pull it off and use it in your hands also
Sorry no pics, but I use a RAM-B-201-A and a RAM-B-201-C. I have mine mounted where your reverse camera screen is. The tablet and holder comes out just in front of the dash vents, which allows me to turn the tablet towards me slightly so I can see it clearly. Doesn't block my vision out the windscreen that way.
hey Jono, obviously it's not fitted in there any more but in the photo, you can see a hump in the middle of the dash mat, above the vents. Well thats where my ram mount was mounted (screwed down using existing holes that the previous owner made). I had a 10in tablet and in no way did it obscure any view. I'm sure I had photos of it actually mounted but can't find any right now. But as Winnie said earlier, you can also get those ram clamp attachment which you can fit to the grab handle

Only illegal if it blocks the view (well QLD at least). With it there and 7" you easily still see a great amount of the bonnet.
Why do I use a tablet versus paper map? - my wife is the worlds worst navigator. This way I don't need to stop to check the maps, though I also use it to log the trip so can quickly pause/re-start and of course so the GPS receives a signal.
The A4A guys actually do have tablets in their rigs, they are more on the passenger side facing them as they have the 10" iPads that are too big to mount that close, along with a slue of other tech goodies including the Hema navigator, so they have multiple electronic Maps/GPS. That's how they show later where they've been/mapped the path they took etc.
Here you go, inside Simons Truck.

This might explain my situation better... that tablet/gps has oziexplorer on it and is not as good as mudmaps that i have on my ipad.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...015/06/334.jpg
I don't mount my 10" tablet yet, but I've just bought a Ram Mount for my Garmin Nuvi 2597LME. I use the Garmin every time I drive the car, not for navigation as such, but as an accurate speedo. Since I've put BFG AT 285/75/R16 on, the car speedo is way out. As I have a 2010 GU, the Ram Mount will use the useless "cubby" at the tip of the centre of the dash. I had a Chinese 7" navigation system with reversing camera that used a suction mount. It was useless, it vibrated so much the unit fell out on a corrugated dirt road. I think the biggest problem with any of these devices is the reflection from the screen, but that's another story. Oh and this oldie loves technology.... :)

neither of these are mine, just one's ive found on the net while looking for idea's. thought maybe you guys can take some inspiration from them as well if you want to get that involved
