Sheer XTC (well most of the time)!

She's a '98 GU Patrol wagon, powered by about 4 donkeys (one of which is lame) in the form of the 2.8 ltr diesel straight six. I've owned it from new, and most of its life it was set up for touring, but over the last couple of years I've been adding a few bits which make it a little bit more capable.

The motor was fitted with a DP chip early in its life, and was one of the biggest improvements of any of the mods I have done. Improved the power immensely. 3" exhaust was recently fitted, however I didn't find much improvement with doing this, maybe the turbo spools up a little earlier in the rev range, that's about it.

It has all the usual bar work, with all the plastic bits on the outside extremities now gone, replaced by steel bits which will take a bit of impact if or when it happens.

Inside isn't anything to write home about, with a couple of radios, a bit of navigation help, and a bit of power and gear storage in the rear.

There's nuthin wrong with the 2.8TDs. If looked after and treated well they will keep on truckin'. OK you cant tow semi trailers with it but still has all the right bits when its required and is very economical to run (I get 13.6 Lt/100Km on the highway fully loaded with family, food and a full trailer of camping gear for a week)

Great for teaching the kids on how to drive (and the missus....) and not relying on the right foot just to get somewhere.

With 33" tyres on, and towing my camper, I really have to work hard on the highway to keep up to speed, especially in any hilly country, but get it off road and into low four, and it is a gem, and can conquer even the toughest of tracks. My fuel economy is nowhere near as good as yours, and the best I have ever got is about 14.5 lts/100k (very frugal highway driving empty) , and usually get around 17 ltrs/100k when towing. Worst ever figure I got was 29 ltrs/100k, but that was towing a pretty heavy camper trailer through some fairly tough areas of the Victorian High Country.

I don't worry too much about checking fuel economy any more, I just use it and fill it up when it's empty.
