ZD30 engine

Hi all I am a UK Terrano owner with a 3 ltr zd30 engine in for repair, and am told you guys are the people to ask, it is the none common rail engine, and starts easy but hunts bad at about 2500 revs and above (when I say hunts) it is like the ignition is turned of for a few milliseconds then on again, a few seconds later it does does it again, is this the spill valve on the pump or could it be an external problem, like connections, I ask this as no fault codes have been generated at all, and I believe a 78 would be for this fault, but I also understand that the pump has its own processor which may not be in communication with the ECU, I have eliminated all other possible problems as far as I can tell, hope you can help, but do think it is probably pump in which case the motor is probably not worth repairing, Rick

Just an update really, tried an electric pump inline before the filter, 80% improvement,think it needs fine tuning regards pressure and flow rate but certainly seems to be on the right track, just need to establish the pressure parameters and get a pump to suite, Rick

Most use a Carter 5-7PSI pump mate. From from I have read, anything higher than this can negate the effectiveness.

Thank you threedogs, will have a hunt in the UK, interesting thing is after putting it back on the internal tank in order to move it I was surprised how well it ran such that I took it up the road, almost perfect and soo much power, so I am now investigating the pump myself, I might add I am an ex diesel engineer, so am well capable of a complete pump strip and rebuild, but of course I have no calibration equipment now so will only be looking at a simple look for anything that could cause this to happen, on the 2.7 there is a mini filter and a metering orifice, we have found the mini filter is best removed, do not know if the VP44 pump has this or similar but I will find out,

Never had a chance to tear down an injector pump, let alone rebuilding a one. Therefore, I do admire(and envy at the same time) the folks who's done it and can do it. :)
