Think I got the date of special steel wrong from memory I think it was invented around 1730 -1735
It was on another thread with all the old stuff on it, I'll have a look
Slowly getting my survival stuff together, picked up a large gold blanket, and a couple of flints and strikers
Doubled up on my first aid stuff to fit Molle pouch, also have a compass and a proper mirror with a hole in the centre for signalling.
I think some water purifying tablets cant hurt , basic stuff as Im only planning on Cape York and the simpson in the next few years.
spare batteries and led torches, plus some high wind matches. and of course there is a knife of some description in there, the Leatherman Kick stays in the car, I'll lay it all out soon and take a picture. Mirror and other stuff was all part of a Boeing survival pack, everything had a use by date even bolts and mirrors go figure.
the pack contained a small led torch and spare batteries ,smelling salts and sachets of burn and antiseptic cream, lint to stop heavy bleeding and a few bandaids

@ 93P more cleaver than knife I like these cast iron knives as they taper from the spine about 5mm to the cutting edge no shoulders.
Its very sharp now and ideal for getting the skin off a pumpkin, and chopping off fish heads yeah more suited to the heavier jobs around camp or the kitchen.
Working on another walking stick, its the ball root from an Acaccia tree [wattle]
need to sand it and use some walnut coloured varnish to finish and put a rubber foot on it

Just checked my emails and it's official, just received my certificate of business registration from ASIC, Southern Leather Solutions is up and running.
Just need to make up the website and find a decent platform for it.

Just received lastest 4x4 aust Mag and a great article on what makes a great "survival" knife.
None of these tanto blade tacticals got a look in as the knife hade to do more than cut, eg,,, dig ,paddle
150mm was at the smaller end and 300 was at the larger end. shape wise they have a 300mm full tang
no point more a large Paint scraper shape with a home made saw back, I'm going to get some 75mm wide leaf
spring and have a go at making one. It wont be pretty but it will work as a survival "TOOL"
Quote from mag " A good survival knife will potentially have hundreds of survival related functions,
cutting,slicing,digging,splitting,self-defence,food prep,fire making, hunting,prying tool, signalling,hammering
make shift screwdriver and so much more," interesting read
If I made this survival knife it should be all I need around camp,
I'll see if I can find a picture of the shape

9That's what I have doing for awhile now, going through tons of different knives etc that would make a good general purpose "tool".
I got the twin bowie set hoping that it would do the job but kept coming back to my Gerber LMF II, can cut, chop, hammer, break glass etc has belt cutter, molle sheath and shapener, used as a spear, trap etc but can't paddle but it can make 1.
That and my backup X Tactical sheath knife is more than enough for my survival pack but have a pocket knife in there as well as a GP knife for skinning etc if needed.
Need to track down that article as it would be a good read

I'm thinking of more like a small machete with a lower sharpened edge as well as on the shovel end.
para cord handle it would pout last cockies egg. wouldn't win any beauty awards but I know it would work.
You hit the nail on the head when you said "Tool" and it needs to be tuff,

This is close but a long way off as well, other pic is what they think is perfect shape
