Not really hunting but at Melbourne gun club in yerring for a bit of a look-see. Got a a mate doing the 5 stand today.
Just got mail today from Gun Emporium and they have some pretty good sale prices including a Howa Varmint fluted barrel in 223 for $549... bloody cheap, it is a heavy barrel.
If I was getting my licence and wanted a 223 varmint I would get a mate to buy it then transfer it later into my name.
I wonder if they would do the Sporter for that price?
I got in trouble...my course this Wednesday is my old lady's birthday damn it!!!!
Doesn't take long mate... And could be a few months before the next one...
I am getting itchy to hunt some pigs does anybody have a property that they are willing to let me on?
Ab when are we having a hunt at your place?
If there is deer I'll be there to shoot one. It's my dream to have a buck in red chittel fallow sambar elk hog rusa in my collection
Is the ground dry/noisy at your place yet AB? Have you seen any snakes this season yet?
Only seen one snake in my time here in front of the church. Dry, rock and clay mate.
As ba mentioned Macca, not the ideal spot for a hunt with multiple people. It's 11 acres with another vacant 10 acres next to it but its a thin block following a ridge for a few hundred metres and a main road on one side.
More of a place to plug rabbits.
I'm sitting at my front door watching 3 or 4 happily eating my garden as we speak!
The deer however use my property then over to rosscos to change valleys as its the only spot to cross safely with the cover of bush and surrounding farms that are all fenced.
You would not use a high caliber rifle on AB's place... far too dangerous and I think you would almost have the cops turn up.
If you wanted a deer Macca all you had to do was be here last summer(bad dry spell here) and go to any State forest in the area and wait by a Dam... it was a Turkey shoot.
It may be like that again this summer the way things are going.
At course now! Permit to Acquire in the mail tomorrow
Head shot 22/250 isn't too big is it haha
you'd almost call ABs suburbia Macca not a place for shooting anything but low velocity 22 I would say.
residential is way to close for anything big
Ohh but it's fun pointing loaded guns at people..... It's an international universally recognised method of communication, that is highly effective in solving language barrier issues.
But seriously when out in the normal hunting world the wisest words are always treat it like its loaded!
The army taught me that people can do stupid things when they are careless with rifles, seen one guy discharge while unloading through a door on an accommodation block :( So lucky the guys staying there were all out at the time. Was interesting explaining to the grunts how the hole got there.
"AD's" (accidental discharges) whilst hunting can result in "ARFF" (accidental return friendly fire) having spent time in the ADF myself the only person i trust with a fire arm is me and me. having had a student on the firing lining with the rest of the class firing sub-machine guns he had a miss-fire and instead of raising his hand and keeping the weapon pointed down range he kept his finger on the trigger and turn towards me across the firing line the motion of which dislodged the offending shell he then emptied the mag across the firing line how he didn't hit anyone i don't know but he was roughly dealt with post haste never trust a safety catch the only safety catch that works is finger of trigger and chamber empty never point muzzle at people and check what is behind your target before firing so you know where the round will end up if you miss or it go's right through and of cause after all that enjoy he hunting experience
I've never been hunting before.
Would be quite an experience I would think.
A friend has a property in Toopuntul NSW that goes hunting all the time.
book us in mego lol I'm happy to guide you on your first trip hehe. seriously though might be able to organise something

Caution Helicopter hunting of Wild Pigs with numerous Kills
Up Eppalock years ago watching the boat races we had a game of cricket, about 8 a side some of us on the other side , anyway one guy was running to make his ground and bumped the umpire [one of us] at the bowlers end.
Next thing we see is a guy loading a double barrel with SGs and waving it around calling us all sorts of names.WTF
Any way I got as close as I could speaking softly as I was going to knock him out If I could get close enough.
never did he collapsed to the ground the rifle was quickly unloaded and wrapped around a tree.
Seems the guy had a break down, but can tell you first hand its not good looking down the barrel of a loaded rifle.
Ambulance can and took the guy away, Cricket was abandoned and drinks called
That is nasty 3D, not all people would have the courage to walk towards him.
being the elder stateman so to speak everyone else pushed me forward,
I was pardon the pun bulletproof back then,
when we get the gang back together once or twice a year we reminisce
and laugh, but was not funny at the time , total silence as I walked towards him
could hear my heart pounding lol
Looks like the Feral Goat population has really exploded in recent years, saw literally hundreds on the sides of the road between Mildura and Broken Hill.
They don't even bolt when you stop, these only moved when I hopped out of the car. The big Billies were quicker to move. They are at Menindee, Mungo and Balranald, when we used to go pig shooting they were around but not in these numbers.

Went gun shopping today. More confused than when I started but got to hold a few and feel the bolt action.
30-06 it is. After feeling a Howa, a Savage , a Ruger and another starting with Z I am tending to the Ruger still. I really like how the magazine drops out and retains the shells loaded in it rather than playing catch as you open to empty. Seems far easier and safer to manage.
Yeah I know the feeling Darren, so many choices, I am looking at a 30-06 also my current favourite is a Tikka T3 though, have you tried one?
Here is my effort Friday/Sat with a borrowed 308 howa 1500. Nailed this sambar stag right on dusk friday night. Couldn't find the damn thing before dark though, so had to go back Sat morning with my mates dog. It had gone about 30m and died in this small creek!
Have a look at a remington sps or a tikka t3 I own both the sps is cheaper and is a solid action with heaps of aftermarket mods. The tikka is amazing! So sweet and smooth. Both shoot .75 to 1 inch off the shelf and with factory ammo.
At least in the creek it wouldn't bloat or stink up!
All of my larger rifles are Remington 700, never had any trouble that wasn't my own fault.
Nice stag there Crate.
I've got a rem 700 sps varmint in 308 that ive bedded and thrown into a hogue stock. Accuracy is top notch but ive honestly never had as many issues with a rifle as ive had with this one. Mag follower spring snapped, usually jams right when you need that fast follow up shot and the x mark trigger snapped at the adjustment screw area because somone at remington decided to drill a hole right through the mile of a trigger leaving about a mm of meat.
Never again. Ill stick to my rugers from now on. At least they're reliable.
Yeah I did hold the tika and its very nice but DOUBLE the price of the Ruger. I could buy a 223 and a 30-06 in a Ruger for the same money as a 30-06 Tika.
I have nothing against ruger and am surprised by your remington as my remington sps stainless in 22/250 is stock standard shoots Moa and feels robust and never 1 jam or misfire using factory ammo over 200 rounds through her. I have an older one just before the new trigger came out about 3/4 years old was $900 and my tikka t3 hunter stainless in cammo stock in 7mm rem mag is so sweet accurate smooth it takes 1 finger to slide the bolt and chamber a round even that size that was about $1200
Not a fan of most rugers.. some are ok.
I still prefer weatherby or howa for the money and the browning a-bolt is a complete piece of rubbish.
There is a lot to consider and be careful listening to the guy at the shop as he might be trying to move stock that is not moving.
