you can run CHKDSK in Windows Safe or normal mode but this will only do a minimal disk and environment check. It wont repair any problems it encounters but it will report if it does find any problems.
When running diagnostics on any HDD no matter what OS, you should run it with the drive "not mounted" meaning an operating system hasnt been started from it.
You can only run CHKDSK /R in a "DOS" environment before the OS has loaded. Win 32 or 64 bit.
