The ability to control the speed of the drive separate to the tow vehicle would be good. I had a search and couldn't find the clip. Will keep trying though.
I know the some WWII motor bikes had drive fitted to their side cars.

Yamaha did a two wheel drive motorbike a few years back. I remember seeing it in the Dakar. Hydraulic drive to a hub on the front wheel. Giving 30% power continuosly.

Try Rubery Owen trailers. Will take you to pages with that and other pto driven trailers. Seems to be a still current use in the agricultural sector
but other uses seems to be an obsolete idea.
That said', it is enormously intriguing. Hell of an amount of engineering for recreational use tho.

Electric hub motors?
Could provide braking & assist, would need some smarts for traction control.
Still don't think it would be worth while.
