Am hoping the postie gets his act into gear and delivers a long awaited parcel to us today.
The crew at Hillbilly Forge have been busy recently working on some project blades for me to finish off with some nice leatherwork. They've also almost finished a matching hatchet to complete their set as well.
It includes 2 bushcraft knives for them and through their generosity, they've also forged 2 for me as well.
A general duties bushcraft tracker knife and a matching big brother to be used for heavy duty work like chopping wood etc out bush like a machete.

Freshly forged and tempered prior to polishing and edging.

Changed the design a tad
Now the big question what to use for the scales [handle]
Keep in mind I still have to acid etch the blade to bring
it back to life, I have some streaky buff which is black with
white streaks, Rams horn very rustic or camel bone
HHmmmmmmm it will all fall in place once I start
@MB First thing is protect yourself from cuts, cause buffing a knife can rip it out of your hand very easily
First Ive taped over the cutting edge a few times with thick tape and put a tip protector on.
finger grooves have been fashioned and smoothed out using a finger file.
File work next..
Just collected them for the Po box

"Never under estimate the power of the tap, let it flow through you"
@MB got a bit of file work done still needs a lot more but you get the picture.
I wish I had a bit of car leaf spring here and Id attempt a Kukri
@once disturbed is the fire lighter made from Olive wood
the other two are horses thats for sure lol
Pine I think with a linseed / waxed finish the
"Never under estimate the power of the tap, let it flow through you"
heres my one of my favorite tools of all time
the old B&D finger file, boy has this done some work.
Not sure if my file work is finished yet, will look in the morning
and thats my choice for scales, The ram horn finishes off much better
than that brown scaley look, also the damascus will be more prononced
once I hit it with some acid
Need to get myself one of those mini belt sanders
"Never under estimate the power of the tap, let it flow through you"
Milion and one uses the guys at JB HIFI use them when they modifiy or make up consoles
I love it even an air one would do.......$100 RRP
update on the up swept skinner,,,,Ive selected some streaky buffalo horn
cause I think the mosaic and the brass pins will highlight better.
Its a bit tricky as I need to shape it first as Im recessing it on the spine
and butt. After that it will have a bevelled edge on all sides.still
need a bit more sanding to shape it right, but you get the picture.
If ran out of sand paper for my power file and with the Patrol parked
have no way of getting to Bunning for more Grrrrrrrrr
Did a bit of messing around with the trackers on some medium density wood to see how the went with basic kindling, cuts through like butter and no change to the edge.
Will be interesting making a sheath for them due to their shape, thinking I may have to order 2 cheap sheathes and use them for templates
Going to try out on some jarrah tomorrow and see how it goes
"Never under estimate the power of the tap, let it flow through you"
this small hatchet arrived,, good size and weight imo
Waiting on bits and pieces for the knife Im making.lol
That's a nice looking axe, where did you find that?
I use those sharpeners daily and they're very good, basically all I use now
"Never under estimate the power of the tap, let it flow through you"
Yeah I brought a few the day you told me about them,
boy do they vary in $$$ like those pencil sharpeners,
anything from $5 to $35.
The hatchet has an area on the spine a sort of anvil where
you can hit it with a hammer or such.
Ill find the link and put it here didnt break the bank either.
Ive found quite a few different hatchets as well to add to my modest collection lol

Bit the bullet so to speak and purchased this hatchet.
Perfect match for my Schrade Uncle Henry Golden spike or Pro-Hunter

This knife arrived today nice weight.... its just a replacement,
That mosaic pin is awesome there are 20 wire pins inside a 3/16th
tube.
The knife is ready to go straight out of the box, very sharp, nylon sheath
which most knives come with these days
This very nice hatchet arrived just now, will match
perfectly with my Schrade Golden spike and pro hunter
LATE EDIT, its very sharp straight out of the box,
could use a flat spot behind the head so you can hit
it with something
some japanese whet stone also arrived two green and a red/white.
the green are 4000 grit the ruby is 3000grit the reverse side is 10,000 grit
and shiny as a tile
All are very fine IMO
Nice, am awaiting on some ruby combo pocket stones to be delivered after trialling a mates stone.
Gives a nice polished edge when finished
"Never under estimate the power of the tap, let it flow through you"
Yes that centre one is ruby, the opposite side being 10000 will polish the edge nicely
Very heavy for small stones IMO
Been thinking about my latest hatchet, Im thinking Ill put a gut hook
where the black marks are,And take the tip off the back so its a flat surface
@once disturbed this may be ok to have a knife station at home 4

Different to the other style you usaully get.
Nice Buck Trapper arrived very happy with it
Has anyone got a Fiskar Knife and Axe sharpener and have any feedback? Saw them available at bunnings and wondering if there any good. https://www.bunnings.com.au/fiskars-...pener_p3400240
I've not tried that model yet to be honest, I use a round, dual grit stone for my axes except my fiskars hatchets as they've got a finer edge so generally use a small fine grit stone.
They do have a diamond sharpener and oil combo by Fiskars that's pretty good, I use that to edge some my leather blades before stropping them. Around $30-35 from memory, will try find a link to them.
Net has been rotten last few weeks and have limited access unless I use mobile data which doesn't last long lol
"Never under estimate the power of the tap, let it flow through you"
This is the set I'm referring to;

Was looking for an all round knife sharpener for when I help the old man killing a calf etc for meat, find the knifes go blunt quickly while skinning the animal and reckon there must be a good all round tool for the job.
Might be better off using a decent steel like the F.Dick ones,
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-F...cAAOSwJ7RYYHbu
The old man puts the knives on the dry part of the wet and dry grinder he has on the workshop but doesn't give a good edge see lots of burrs and pits in it.
I carry 1 of these and not had a problem with the blades at all;

Still think if you are processing a whole beast in the field then a decent steel would work.
Buy a decent Arkansas whetstone [soft] and create an edge which you can then maintain with the steel.
What size knife you use will determine what you need to maintain the edge.
Are you using butchers knives for example ???
That brought back some memories TD (good & bad), used to work in Abattoirs & Boning rooms back in the day. Used many F.Dick knives & a steel the same as this one rubbed down with 1200 wet & dry to near a smooth finish.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-F...3D302176947737
Had a flat Victorinox steel as well. Couple of hits on it then a couple on the F.Dick. Could work the boning knives all day without having to put them on the stone.
Hi 3D I'm looking for a good skinner but I don't want to break the bank , have you got any suggestions
This is along the lines I'm thinking
