The following day & pretty much the same spot - after a really wild night in which 2 storm cells came together directly above us the river flowed for the first time in 6 years.

We got to know the place pretty well as we were trapped there for 7 days until the waters went down.
We also felt privileged to meet these little guys who only appear following a heavy rain, the rest of the time they live underground.

Ormiston Gorge in the West McDonnell Ranges.

Ormiston Gorge it is. Not a bad spot to get stuck in. Unfortunately all that water prevented us from getting into Palm Valley though.The water from Ormiston flows into the Finke River & I understand the Finke River bed doubles as the track into Palm Valley. Reason enough to return sometime. Loved the West Macs. When we got trapped, we were there with about half a dozen other travellers. The rangers, who have a house close to the camp, rocked up in the morning to give us the news & to check we were all ok, (half the car park had been washed away, including a section under the wheels of our bus), & arrived bearing foods of all descriptions which they had raided from their own fridges to ensure no one went hungry. Great camaraderie throughout.
