Cheers for a detailed response UncleFrosty.
Always good to have a place to start.
I will check the rod for details in the morning.

Great days fishing by the looks of things.
I went up to swansea...east coast tassie last week got a heap of nice flatties and a nice gummy too.
Meant to get scallops but the compressor broke a weld on first dive...bugger!
Snapped axle on boat trailer too...one of those trips!

The hardest part of a new place is finding the fish....last 3 days i have fished the one spot as i had a few good runs on the live bait rod....lost a good mulloway and a few sharks....lots of whitting around for live baiting and today caught enough to bring a feed home...Karratha is a hard spot for lanbase http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...017/07/115.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...017/07/116.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...017/07/117.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...017/07/118.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...017/07/119.jpg

Not fished much in the sea at all but it looks like it's some sort of blackfish or Luderick , good eating supposedly .
Look up western rock blackfish photos and I think that's what you caught , not very good on the chew apparently .
Or here's a link to an Identification of our fish species site .

That's the one! Many thanks @GQtdauto.
As it turns out, once filleting started, it reminded my bro of Buff Bream so it didn't end up in the freezer or frying pan.
Cheers
Thanks @Avo - I never knew it's name. Just googled it n found out that's the usual spot when I'm down that way - although I err on the side of caution and generally fish the safer north facing side, rather than that nice slowly-sloping east facing side. (I can jump up a 2m ledge faster than I can out run those sneaky southerly swells washing up that east side...)
Heres two from my NT trip back in April. Man I so want to go back up there!!!!

Nice mac , if you ever get the chance to go to Mission beach you can catch them off the pier .
A local was horrified when I was going to throw mine back in and so I gave it to him instead , well he did give me the livey that I caught it with .
RIP Alvey Reels...

Buy your spares while they're still available!
Yeah bloody awesome fish to catch! But the taste of it is not my liking. It was ok but its got nothing on three hour old fresh Golden Snapper or Barra. We are starting to plan our next trip up there, I reckon if I caught another Spaniard, I would release it. Unless it was bigger. Lol. This was far too big to kill and eat. It made around a 16, 1 inch thick steaks. A bloody lot of food for six people.
I need to belt you across the face with a wet fish. Hate fish! How?
I can understand fish from any fish shop in Melbourne. Or any shop that sells fish thats more than a day dead. My nephew was the same as you, then we went up north and he's like WTF! This fish taste so good!
A nice 7 Lb, 61 cm Golden Perch caught by a mate at Copeton Dam over the weekend off the bank in 4 feet of water right at the camp. Couple of large Catfish as well, no luck with the Cod even though conditions were perfect for trolling lures.

Couple from a trip to Splitrock Dam yesterday. A nice 70 cm Cod & a 45 cm, 8 lb Golden Perch, both caught on lure. Both released

After fishing the Glenelg in Nelson where there wasn't even a nibble, we drove up to Sapling Creek and immediately got a few large bites. I caught my first estuary perch and my son landed a nice bream. We threw back a quite a few under-size bream too.
Um, OK, Tony, but the camera was 65km away, when we got them.
Be prepared and have a camera with you, never know what you will see that is photo worthy.
@TPC It is Okay now. I've removed anything offensive!!!

Up the Snowy Mtns mate, a few around, they will improve in condition and activity with the coming on of more insect activity with the warmer whether. Can enjoy mid week and rather it that way.
My mate Phil who some of you know found this reel at our normal camp at Bearii.
Ive emailed the museum and found out its a 1958 model that cost 2 pound 10 and 6 back in the day.
the company started in1933 and close in 1987. Alvey with their bakelite side casters finished them off.
Its a 4.5" Steelite side caster. got some very old Mitchell reels both trout and surf and some very old lures.
Ill make up a board a display them.
As Phil says who knows how long it was stuck in the mud on the banks of the murray
Steelite, a fine piece of engineering, noted the coil spring and actuated by the line run guide moment for locking the reel spool in position, and the drag tensioning star wheel (would presume) . Nice find and yes deserves a special place.
plus its left or right handed not bad , cause I think most ppl fish the wrong way ,
You should hold the rod with your dominant arm and wind with your weakest.
Being a right hander I wind with my left I used to wind with my right but found it easier winding left handed.
that should bring some comments lol
