I've been watching a US tv show recently, a mate got me into it. Thought I'd throw it up hear as some of you boys might be interested. It's called Meat Eater. He goes on hunts and eats what he kills. :) loves the big game stuff, bears, deers and mountain sheep, really all sorts of game. He doesn't always get what he was after either.
I'm currently contemplating purchasing a .270 any suggestions on good quality makes? Or even comments on experiences with a .270.
My mate has a 30-06 and another mate is looking at getting a .308, so I don't need a large calibre. Mainly shoot roos (with a permit) and foxes. But am definitely going to head out for some deer. So after a reasonably flat calibre which is capable of covering all the bases and I feel the .270 does that we'll. thoughts?
.270 kicks as hard as a 3006 mate and is a huge overkill for both roos and foxes... I have a 243 and is perfect for that plus small deer.
If you are only after foxes and roos then a 223 is the go.
You find a lot of places get sick of you shooting on it using a large caliber and a .270 is just that... it is a big case behind a smaller bullet.
Sean has a 270 and will tell you it is a good caliber and shoots very flat but just about never takes it out (only for pigs or Deer) the rest of the time its his .222
A bit to think about.
I forgot to mention we also use a 22-250 and .22magnum if needed on the foxes (.22 for bunnies). My brother (up in newcastle) has a .243 and it is a nice gun to shoot (sako 75). Just not quite big enough for the deer (except the small ones).
So the .270 has the same kick as 30-06 then? Interesting to know, I though it might be less, obviously never fired a .270. 30-06 isn't too bad to shoot once or twice but a few rounds down range and its letting you know about it. My mate has a muzzle brake on his now and the recoil is now no more than my brothers .243, but the noise at the shooter is much more (noise isn't a concern where we shoot). Is the .270 a flatter trajectory then a 30-06? Muzzle velocities are faster been a smaller projectile so I believe it is flatter shooting?
If I get a 30-06 the browning Maral is what I'm looking at. For the .270 I hadn't quite decided on a make, I do like the sako's though.
Yes a much flatter shooter... a lot of people are fooled by it being a .20 cal but with it having so much case/powder behind it kicks.
I do like my hard flat shooters and a deer rifle you will hardly shoot so can get away with it kicking hard but as soon as you start using it for ferals and others where you may need to fire off 3- 5 shots in a short period it can be a bit much.
Unless you are a big boy it can wear thin getting hit in the shoulder... you may find you are not bothered by it.. Sean is not far from you maybe he will let you have a shot of his and you can make up your own mind mate.

All shot with a .22 or a 410, When I was stationed at Kulgera on the SA NT border used to drink with the Rabbit shooters, they would get 400pair a night every night for a week from the same spot, they would process them in the bush and place them in an on site chiller container. Remember well getting 100 pair on night up Mildura way, ginger, white you name it. not any more I see more rabbits where Boots works on Ballarat RD ,LOL.
Rabbits introduced to feed the ppl and allow sport for the troops ooops better bring in foxes to control the rabbits yeah that worked to. My son brought a fox cub home a few years back, but domestic dogs hate the smell of them.
You should be able to shoot ferals anytime and they are culling Koalas and no one is jumping up and down

If we come across them we do, don't get many but have from time to time, basically any cat outside the house is feral . Haven't come across feral dogs though. We would shoot them if we see them and at I think around $50 a scalp the neighbours dogs start looking feral.Quote:
