Yeah, batteries are strange creatures. They can last better if they are flattened and some are better if they are not flattened at all. We have some clever batteries around these days so we should be able to eliminate the problem .
Lithium-Ion batteries should sort the problems out for now!

Some battery places rebuild them. Should only be $50-$100 depending on chemistry of the battery and size..

Did some benchmarking on this a while ago and found that depending on the battery type (and using the manufacturers recommendation for first charge) resulted in up to 200% prolonged battery life. For example, 13" Macbook Pro - take one and charge on first use for 9 hours, other use straight away - the one charged as per their instructions still going strong (6 hour battery life). One used straight away averages about 2.75 hours. Won't go into tedious detail but trust me - almost always works.
