Power A/T Button

I've tried my switch and the only selection that seems to make an ounce of difference is the hold position. If i select that it hold 2nd gear when you take off (for slippery roads etc) ?? Why you don't just select 2nd gear i have no idea ?? The other positions make no difference when you select them and watch the tacho, same on my son in laws Patrol.

I'll check, but I'm pretty certain that if you just put it in second gear to take off, it still starts in first, slips to second as per normal and won't go to third (the last bit is certain, it's the take off I'm questioning).

When I select the power button, it doesn't give more "power" as such, but instead it holds the gear longer on acceleration (under load) and drops down a gear quicker under load ... good for towing ... I notice that if power is selected, I need less throttle input to get it to change down a gear, and as said, if I give it some or am towing, it holds the gear longer (revs higher and harder) so you don't say drop into third from second and place more stress on the box trying to accelerate/tow at lower revs in a tall gear.

If yours isn't noticeably doing that, then not sure why.

I keep mine in power. I like the quick change downs.

I should have read your reply more closely the 1st time jimako, what you say makes complete sense. The middle position on the button simply selects either HOLD or POWER automaticaly but would obviously select POWER 99.9% of the time unless you were losing traction when taking off on snow or wet grass etc, then it would select HOLD.

Well that's good info with no owners book I thought down was Eco up power and middle hold seems I've been driving in hold since I've had it

After a bit more experience in low range this is how it works for me. Select hold and shift gears manually. For climbing many will recommend 2nd gear to reduce wheel spin, however, I've found with the standard nissan gearing steep, or long, climbs put a LOT of pressure on the torque converter below 1500 rpm and the TC "pings". 1st gear works much better and the rpm will stay between 1500 and 2000 with the TC very happy. Descents always in L1 with a little left foot brake and a touch of the loud pedal.

On the tar, do want you like.

The specification manual clearly shows the difference. In Power mode, the transmission shifts down at higher speed at part throttle from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd.
It has no bearing on up shifts.

Yeh that's what is in the owners manual holds it in second for snow and sand starts to reduce spinning on take off
