Looks like a big red gum, which doesn't narrow it down much. . . Murray somewhere? ?

No, not a camera, or flood mark, not the Murray. This object has been in the tree for a very long time.
is that some kind of marker for the Paddle steamers along the say Darling River
No, TD. Not a river marker. Hint, the white plate has been placed there to highlight the object for tourists.

So you do a tourist route and follow all these markers as POI, like follow Hume and Hovell etc
No, the object was buried deep in the tree, many, many years ago. There is a bitumen road through the property, now. Think rural activities, and what could be a sharp enough object to pierce red gum so deep it can't be removed.
