That's what I was thinking, kingpin bearings.. You'd hear wheel bearings like that..
My vehicle is serviced every 5000km and had all new wheel bearings 6 weeks ago. I'm hopeless with mechanics but pay to have it over maintained. Any ever found it's fixed there and then.
Your right about not hearing anything. I hit a wash out (wet season creek) not too fast I think. Then it lunged to the side and I stopped.
Interesting point came out it to do with remote travel and communications though. I got on my sat phone and tried to make a call to the next town along the track and couldn't hear a thing. So I used my HF radio to make a radio call. It worked fine.

They can be difficult as they work back to one geostationary satellite so you need to be facing the direction of the satellite when using them, but you probably already know that.
I have had difficulty using the Thuraya when it is windy as the wind prevented me from hearing and when I turned away from the wind I lost service.
Do you have insurance for a recovery like that?
