Hey Toddie, it's a direct Weld On Permanent rack.
It welds along the gutter and roof as a roof slider and welds to the A Pillar at the front.
Here is a pic off the guy I bought the original rack from and have modified it to suit with the rear to be utilized for a bit of fire wood it needed.

So I had to drill 14mm holed up into the bottom of the chassis to mount the GU tow bar. I'm pretty stoked with how it's come up.
I wire brushed and painted the towbar before mounting it.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/05/32.jpg
Today I cut off the factory tie down points off the back as they are in the way and not required.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/05/34.jpg
Then I made a start on my new rear bar. I bought some 100mm wide flat plate 16mm thick to use as the mounting plates and will incorporate a recovery point at each chassis rail too.
In between it Pissing down rain today I got a little bit done.
I will make the middle of my new bar the same as my old one with C channel as I like the look.
The mounting plates.

Marked out and centre punched ready to be drilled in steps.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/05/37.jpg
Now the 25mm recovery hole suitable for a shackle. The plate is 16mm thick and I left 25mm of meat in front of the hole. I consulted 3dogs about this and he reckoned that would be fine.

Using a 100mm cutoff wheel I marked where I will grind to later.

I bought this drill bit set off eBay years ago! Bloody handy bit of kit!!!

Did I mention it pissed down most of the day!!

Damn I need a Shed!!!

Mounted up the mounts to the GQ Factory towbar mounting holes.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/05/48.jpg
I'll grind the radius later.
Cut and test fitted the C channel
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/05/49.jpg
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/05/50.jpg
Measured, marked and drilled the holes for the 4 mounting points across the back where I have previously welded nuts on for my last bar.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/05/51.jpg
I have also decided I will cut the end of the towbar off behind the pin hole and per mantle mount a new hook into the tow bar tube with new longer bolts through from the top like the removable one but permanent.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forum...2016/05/52.jpg
Getting there.

Can I ask why have you added the tow bar?
I thought you would have gone the kaymar style setup and put it all to your chassis.
Keep a wicked departure angle.

Hi Kallen,
To be honest i Ummm'd and Arrrrr'd about this for a long time. I took a heap of measurements of my old bar and the tow bar and there was very little in it. The old bar hung down and the tow point stuck out almost the same distance.
When i made the rear bar originally it was about 12 years ago. I Over Engineered it heaps and was / am confident that it is a Strong bar and up to the task. Well tested too i tell you. Back then though i knew less than i do now about Snatching forces off the tow point. No discussions then really about Tow Balls (well a little).
So this option removes all doubt i may have and i know for sure there is No Risk. I have managed the Risk as much as i can.
Note also the Significant Damage to the bottom of the LRA Tank!!! The Tow Bar fully protects the tank now and this damage will be almost Impossible to occur again! Big Winner and probably the deciding factor.
Once bolted up with the hook in it looks like it sticks out heaps!! But with the new rear bar on too it will not look at bad. I will cut about 150mm off the end of it and that will actually mean it will be a better departure angle than before!!! add the 37s and its a win.
The new Hook will be permanently mounted the same way as it is in that receiver but straight through the Towbar with holes drilled from the top through to the bottom so t will be very snug.

I was thinking the tank protection would be the winner..
And yes I guess departure angle isn't an issue when running monster truck tyres lol..
It's looking good.
Might have to drop in if we make roofys and see it personally..
Show the wife what could have been...

Following this as I'll be interested in seeing the finished product. Will it make an appearance at the donk party ?

I wish. Nah not a chance unfortunately. I still have a fair bit to do and keen to drive this winter. Given the state of affairs with defects and Police these days it will most likely be a Night Drive car. Lucky I LOVE NIGHT DRIVES!!!

Yes it is mate. I have Kaned it to mate! Great bit of kit. Rate it highly! It has been my primary recovery point for 13 years.
I will pack out a new hook the same way inside this tube. I like the hook as you can hook up in a hurry if needed.

Yeah that was the idea behind it, if your sinking you can hook up and hopefully be on your way again.
Id think Ive made 5000 of them over the years, even have a bolt on one on the back of my Patrol.
Like the pipe work BTW
-
Yeah when I drowned my GQ In 2003 the water was over the roof on the drivers side and upto the glass on the passengers side. I was using a pin only in the rear towbar and unfortunately my mate couldn't find the pin to insert the snatch strap in chest high water. By the time he hooked me up I was a writeoff. Had I had a hook the water inside would have been maybe to my knees.
I bought your hook the following week.

Not bad for a pen pusher... 😂
JK.. it's looking awesome mate..
One little bit I would add, and you maybe onto it or going vertical to your rack, but to give that rear 1/4 bar a little more strength add a bit of tube or plate to join the rear 1/4 to slider on the outside egde.. Sorta like a continuation peice. .
That'll make a triangle and give a bit more strength against it..

That would be awesome mate. I need 27mm of packer all up as it's obviously bigger than the one you made. I was going to cut up son plate I have here. Can you bring it to ABs next weekend mate?

Also 3Ds, you know that the @ is working again for notification but you can't leave a space like you have there. @threedogs is a winner though.

The spacers are 8mm and 10mm , unable to make it to ABs but maybe Jaysee could drop in and pick them up for you.
Ill put 2 of each you'll be able to figure something out, is the back of that square section open?
-
@threedogs why won't you make it ot AB's mate? Everyone is keen to meet you

seeing thats 50 x 50 x 6mm RHS
wouldnt 2 x 6mm spacers fill the void better,??
Where were you going to use 27mm of packers.??
Keep the bit you cut off that small 65 x 65mm lip
will come in handy else where.
-
@threedogs If you go I'll go, hows that sound?
-
@threedogs that is a 100% serious proposition.
-
I hear you but dont hold me to ransom lol.
Id love to go and meet all the guys but its just

Cheers Paul. My rear bar also has 2 recovery points built in to take a shackle do the hook will be used for towing and light snatching only. As we discussed with a 24v winch snatching will be rare.

Yeah but then I need to hold it at the right angle. These are hand cut with the 5" grinder and I am doing them pretty quick.

If I was doing a complex cage or something then I'd have grabbed the notcher for sure. My mate who owns the bender has that notcher and I could have grabbed it to.
All good. Smashed them out.

Got a bit done on the weekend. So everything is tacked up right.... So I need to unbolt everything and remove all the bar work off the car to get a heap of welding and grinding done ready for paint. I unbolted the rear bar and stupidly tried to remove it alone and broken the left darling wing off!! Grrrrrr. Cleaned it up and got Naomi to hold it while I tacked it again. Needless to say Naomi helped me unbolt everything.

I also did some work to my winch. It's been in pieces but just need to put it together, might grab a Freespool blanking plate I reckon.
