Yeah ok.... I have owned about 20 rifles now... I had an ex military 30-06 the type with the real short barrel and that bloody hurt.

I have owned 2 x 308's 2 x 30-06's a 303 Lee Enfield a 223 break open, a 243 Parker Hale.... I loved that rifle.. about 5 x .22's and a bunch of odds and ends.. I have two shot guns both side by side with one being a 12g and the other a .410
I have also owned a 17hmr but swapped that for my custom .204 Ruger (my baby)

As I have sold my budget 30-06 to fund the .243 I will look for a replacement in the not to distant future and would like something different... thats why I am interested in what the 7mm is like.

I will never go back to the 308 I dont think but would go back to a 30-06... fun fun fun !!!

What's the largest calibre you can get in qld? On a standard licence ?

I think the .308 is over rated people only use it because it's cheap to shoot as it's military. The 30-06 is a great round and I was wanting an aught six but after using my mates 7mm and research it felt right plus it's metric it's a magnum and sounds cool haha.

You can get anything if you can justify it. Black powder guns are huge .55 calibre and heavy bullets but slow.guy at the gunshop has a 488 Lott my mate has a 416 ruger. 338 laps aren't big as such but due to high energy levels can't be used on most ranges unless a 1000 m range. Big is not always better it's more of a wank factor

A mate of mine has a .383 he uses for stalking. Seems a bit over the top?

Only reason I asked was I found a pic showing different calibre's its just hard to know a good size to get.

It depends what you wanna shoot? Why you want to shoot it and at what distance do you want to shoot at. Do you shoot on a bench or is it a hunting rifle if so is it an all weather rifle or dry use only will you use pay bi pod or are you shooting from a vehicle. These are the questions you need to answer before purchasing a firearm.

My 7mm I wanna shoot deer or larger game.(in some states 270 is min calibre) distance as close as possible but may shoot across gullies so up to 400metres. It'll be a hunting rifle in all weather so composite stock for weigh reduction no timber care and stainless barrel for weather.

Thanks Macca some good stuff there.... very flat and a bit faster than the 30-06. I will have to see if I can get a shot of one at the range.

Funny when some think there first rifle should be a 308... makes me laugh as they soon realise they cant just go banging off rounds and many properties dont like you shooting 30cals.. plus nearly $2 a shot it can get expensive.

Every shooter should own at least 2 .22's for some good plinking fun... so many McDonalds toys have been taken to the range and destroyed.

I would place toys in front of other shooters targets and no one would mind and a little later you would hear a cheer as the toy was hit.... at less than 10 cents a shot good clean fun.

I will look into the 7mm and make my own mind up but the stats look good.

The 7mm 08 is a very popular caliber in NZ as is the .270. I had a .300 Win Mag when I lived in Queenstown, which was a ridiculously large caliber. My .270 was a beautiful, flat shooter that was also pleasant to fire. Another great, but not so popular, caliber is the .280 which has a little more knock-down power.

The reason I had a .308 was because it was an old SLR that I used to have in the army, was great fun to shoot and the ammo was cheep!

It really does depend on what you want to do with your firearms... I had a different rifle for each occasion and I loved each one. My brother had a .410 shotgun, considered a "Lady's" gun, but we used to go out with it after school and on the weekends, going after pigs in the pine forest next to the house, using .410 solids.

So you can get solids for the .410.... what are they like on the bore???

I like my little .410... a few years ago I nearly scored a poachers .410... love that it all folds up so small.

Might take mine to the range as I know nothing about its spread or range as I have only fired 3 shots with it on the Woods Point trip to scare the guys swimming... Roofy made me do it !!!!!

no. 58 has a spread of about 2 meters @ 2500m, and usually zeroed within 1m @ 1000m. Apart from the blue version, which is just a normal lead bullet for training, the general kill/frag radius is about 2/5m, so the rabbit won't exist in any form once hit. It was always fun to shoot. The black versions are way more accurate, higher velocity (over 4000 fps) and better range but no explosive bang at the end. Coming in at between $50-$100 a bullet (non-training rounds) I'm sure glad I wasn't paying the bills.

25mm M242 Bushmaster chaingun, bit heavy to carry around for stalking deer though, I don't even think a patrol could mount one effectively coming in at 110kg without ammo or other bits and pieces.

Otherwise when I go shooting we usually have a couple of rifles and a shotgun to chose from. Usually a .22lr for rabbits, a .22 magnum for a bit further out. A 30-06 for other game usually foxes or roos, and a 12g U/O shotgun for foxes as well. I don't own any of them but have access when ever I need something so I think I will look at getting a .243 for myself as I have shot a couple of them and also find they are a comfortable and accurate calibre with plenty of power for the stuff we shoot.

yeah I can't wait till my girls are older enough to put there names on licences.The only .22 I got is from an old farmer when he passed away..left me a model one single shot Lithgow model 1.If I got my licence..since then been a law abiding citizen..love it shoots straight as..my .177 is good for 100mt,but can hit a shag at 200mtrs every now and then.

running the solids through a modern barrel is no probs at all BA, only gotta be wary if it is an older gun as thinner/ more brittle steel. If yours is an older gun, just ask an amourer to give it a once over and see what they think. It shouldn't be a problem but I'd hate to see it barrel go like a Chinese lantern. If it is okay to use, you are gonna have yourself a kick-a$$ little gun!

I should get the wife's 12ga checked out, bought it for her birthday a few years back, it's an old Ithaca, think about 80yrs old or so. Thing weighs a ton because the yanks never used to proof their shotguns back then, they'd just build them extra thick/sturdy. It's fine with no.4shot but I've never been game to try steel shot or slugs through it.

I still have my shot maker if anyone in Brisbane wants to make lead shot for reloading shot shells. Can also make SGs

I looked into making cast bullets for my 303 once, got turned off it by the local gunshop, mind you that bugger charged me $200 over the odds for my 223(hindsight is wonderful).

Great to have a hunters thread. Have always loved my shooting. Grew up with the old man taking me out after rabbits around Ballarat and Dundonnel, and then in the Stanthorpe areas, Texas (Qld) and the rest up in FNQ where there isn't much besides hogs. Although there are a few deer if you know where to go. I've got a lovely old Browning trombone (pump) .22, a .410 single shot, a beaut Sako .222, a Winchester Featherweight .243, a Browning BLR in .308, a Miroku 12g under/over a 1901 Lee Enfield 303 and another mint 1917 Lee Enfield 303 still in the grease-proof paper wrapping.

Hunting, Fishing and 4wdriving is a pretty good healthy combination I reckon, and the kids love it too.

I dont think you will need that 303 in paper.... I really think you should just hand it over to me as I will make sure it is looked after for many years to come !!!

Once you could pick a 303 up for not much money then when I got into shooting they were about the $250-$500 mark for a decent shooter and now with matching numbers phwark!!!!!!!

Mine was not much to look at but was bloody accurate but I made the mistake of buying a tonne of ex military ammo and did not know how corrosive it was.... I scrubbed and scrubbed and tried all the tricks but by this time the barrel was stuffed... such a shame as I loved my 303.

Irish has a very very nice custom 303 and when he falls off a cliff I will inherit it wont I Peter !!!

I'm also just about to pick up a nearly unused little USAF survival rifle. One of those breakdown 410/22lr combo guns. Not sure of the era yet, but it has the metal frame, no wood on it.

Should be great fun for the kids with that one!

Have been thinking about pegging a couple of ducks on my next trip, but haven't mucked with them for many years. Normally can't be ducked trying to make something edible out of them.

Ok so I shoot it..what the prep....tell me have gun want to shoot but don't know how to go about it properly..we always get duck in plum, or pineapple sauce..i would try duck n plum..to start..anygood duck in campoven reciepies?

Not a huge fan of duck although my wife has found a recipe that is yummy and has sort of changed my mind.

Yesterday on tv the were making a replica of THE BEAST President Obamas ride. 6" laminated windows very high tech indeed. The best bit was the 50mm rifle some ridiculas ft per sec time over big distances the even sourced some armour piercing ammo to try. All I can say is you wont be taking one of them rabbiting.
The mob were called TAC in Texas the estimated THE BEAST would cost about $2 mil without the frills.
But the stats on the 50mm rifle had me gob smacked

I haven't prepped duck myself but I believe hot water releases the feathers to pluck properly.

My PTA just arrived for my 7mm rem mag just waiting for it to arrive in Brisbane then I'll have some pics for you.

Best way to pluck a duck is when it's still warm.

One of my favourite recipes for duck is thinly sliced duck breast which is then covered with 'Coat N Cook' and then fried in a pan. Mmmm.

Agree - warm is the best way to pluck those little guys - if you use water, temp is around 70 Deg Celsius and a little detergent does not hurt as it helps wash their oil off letting the water penetrate the feathers better.
