The 7mm 08 is a very popular caliber in NZ as is the .270. I had a .300 Win Mag when I lived in Queenstown, which was a ridiculously large caliber. My .270 was a beautiful, flat shooter that was also pleasant to fire. Another great, but not so popular, caliber is the .280 which has a little more knock-down power.
The reason I had a .308 was because it was an old SLR that I used to have in the army, was great fun to shoot and the ammo was cheep!
It really does depend on what you want to do with your firearms... I had a different rifle for each occasion and I loved each one. My brother had a .410 shotgun, considered a "Lady's" gun, but we used to go out with it after school and on the weekends, going after pigs in the pine forest next to the house, using .410 solids.
