Steering wheel audio switch, works on GU7 too details below
Background
Intalling a non-genuine Head unit with reverse camera and I wanted steering wheel switch controls. I used a 2002 maxima switch, I could not find a harness so I just connected it myself. Here was the trick which sounds more complicated than it is.
The PAC SWI-RC (available from ebay) reads the resistance values from each button, and assigns a command associated with that resistance. It does not care what the value is as long as each button has a different value. The Patrol has two circuits SW1 and SW2 and trip (6 buttons) on SW1 buttons have 300ohms, one 600ohms and one 0 ohms SW2 300 and 600ohms. On my switch there is also a 'trip' button with 0 ohms which is a different circuit again. The trick is to add resistors so each button has a differnent resistance on the same wire,
Connections
Place a 150ohm resistor behind the switch on SW1 (so there is no button with 0 ohms) and then join them together, this will mean the 5 buttons will each have a discrete resistance i.e. 150,300,450,600&750. Now I am also going to use the trip button as a power on/off so add a different resistor in my case I used 1200ohm and connected it to the same wire. All this is done behind the switch next to the airbag. Then I connected it to a vacant wire in the harness coming out of the vehicle harness (inside the steering wheel). The find that wire in the harness next to the radio and connect it to the white wire on the PAC SWi-RC(It is easy to find if you drop the cover on the bottom of the column and then you can see the correct colour, or use a multimeter).
The only connection left is common. Find the common wire behind the switch (using a multimeter), this gets connected to earth. Now you could just connect it to earth next to the switch, but I have used another of the vacant wires in the harness and earthed it at the radio. I did not want to take the risk that the steering wheel earth might change resistance as the vehicle gets older, making the switch inoperative.
Additional comment
The PAC SW1-RC unit requires programming to recognise the resistance of each button, just follow the instructions on their web site or in the box (Note: program 3 for all Nissan).
Also Note the PAC SW1-RC standard instructions request much the same task, when you use a genuine harness/ genuine switch you still need to add the 150ohm resistor to join the SW1 and SW2 together, however they do it behind the radio. So the work involved is much the same with or without a harness. I was also lucky as my switch came with a plug and the wires were cut, it would be a bit harder to connect to the switch without a plug.
I hope this info helps all the Patrol lovers out there that want a Genuine Nissan Audio switch on their Beast. With a non-genuine radio.
