Another alternative could be those little round battery operated led lights with a small magnet on the back. They sell for around $10 at most auto shops, I think. Brilliant for those quick, easy, situations.
I've also got a couple of portable, solar powered, lights. Last quite a while - well, this time of year from sunset until I go to bed.
Agree that LED is here to stay and may be the future!

I buy all my torches off Deal Extreme. Every once in a while you get a dud and they lost an order on me once, but I've got a compact ~1000lm unit that runs off a single 18650 rechargable battery and it's an absolute gem. Have another couple of LED units that run off AA's and they are fantastic too.
Have a couple more on order at the moment.
Found this one on deal extreme,
Any thoughts before I jump in, what sort of distance do these things cover

I got a mini maglite led for chrissy its pretty impressive for what it is. Lifetime warranty, and if you shop around probly get it for less than $50. I can spot possums about 100m away. LED torches are getting really cheap these days.
I bought the Fenix TK41. Pretty bright and currently on Amazon for $109.
