The ones I have had apart far enough to see have all had the larger spigot on the flywheel end. So more like the T engine.

There are 28mm and 30mm gudgeon pins. So obviously the little end (piston end) will be different. This seems to be more of a disassemble to know. Although I think the silvertop maye have 28mm gudgeons and the blacktop and NA have 30mm gudgeons. Ben-e did note some of this is in his engine build thread Im pretty sure.
Good little read here ab

The easiest was to tell a true silvertop block (if it is dismantled obviously) the ports for the lifters. Silvertops have 25mm lifters, NA blacktop and T have 27mm.
My 96 blacktop had the 30mm gudgeons. The sludged pre Aug 95 blacktop I was offered for replacement of my POS pile of scrap was a silvertop with a black rocker cover. 28mm pins, 25mm lifters.
The article above saying black tops are unsuitable for turboing is nothing but an opinion based on a guess.
Yes. I did crack 3 pistons, 2,4 and 6. All originating from the centre of the swirl chamber, cracking perpendicular to the gudgeon pin. I cannot see the cracks on the under side of the crown. I haven't done a proper crack check though and likely wont. I'll add that I was turning a 30 psi boost gauge pretty much back around to zero,
I didn't strip the motor because of the cracked pistons, it was always going to happen. I just was not surprised when I found them.
Might have found something folks!!!
I'll let you know tomorrow!
Excitement!
Fingers crossed for you AB
