Thanks Growlers, its working, getting vewy vewy sleepy as Mr Elmer Fudd was known to say.
I didn't realise the background to the Kelly history - I'm up to 1880. It is quite interesting. I don't know the extent, if any, to which the author is biased, but the book is non fiction and paints Kelly and sympathisers as more than just theives.
They had issues with authority didn't they and were treated badly by the authorities because if their background??

Just getting to Glenrowan now, where the plan seems to be that that robbery will lead to declaration of a republic around Benalla. The author contrasts this with the efforts of the Boers in South Africa in the first and second Boer wars, making the point that the Boer leadership saw the wars as a step on a path to a different future, whereas the author paints the Kelly vision as kinda stopping at the creation of the republic. Dunno, its a bit complicated to capture and sumari2e and I'm still reading it :-)
