Great stuff I was under the impression that the stick with
the two holes was softwood and the turning stick hardwood. is that right??
This is right up OD's alley, me Id go to Bunnings [hardware store] and buy some timber to suit. lol

Some ram horn scales arrived from the UK,
as you can see plenty of natural scales ranging from black and white streaky buffalo
to the jigged buff [black ribbed] then the butterscotch horn and natural ram horn.
Do have some rose wood scales .
Also next time up the Murray Im gunna cut a knob off a river red gum
and see how they look. lol
Yes some make the turning stick (drill) out of harder wood then the stick with the holes in, they do this to increase the usage of the difficult to make drill and just replace the wood with the holes in. You don't want to use resinous wood like pine because the resin acts as a lubricant.
You want the pivot block (handle) to be a hard wood or even a rock, but i made it all from the one type of wood and it worked well.
Thanks for that I'll see what i can come up with ,
i have plenty of Norfolk Is pine and cypress but they are too sticky,
however there are some fruit wood off cuts I'll try, Ill use a 12mm dowel as turning stick
we'll see live and learn, better than using two hand imo lol
Nice work Onkey, well thought out.
There's a survival thread on the forum that would be a great section for a step by step walk through if you ever get time to knock 1 up?
I carry multiple methods of fire lighting in my Troll, survival bag and EDC grab bag

I have quite a few of those clips, they're awesome to use for tarps, hootchies etc, have set munchkins cadet patrol gear up with a heap of them.
Nice score finding some of your gear again.
