Two Gold Coast hunters threatened with rape and being strung up, Toowoomba court hears
A HUNTING trip turned into a horrifying nightmare for two Gold Coast men, who were threatened with rape and told they would be strung up in a cold room and eaten by pigs, a Toowoomba court has heard.
The men, aged 20 and 26 at the time, had loaded their ute with hunting gear and two dogs for the trip near Millmerran on March 17 last year, The Chronicle reported.
However, as they drove past the free range pig farm of Justin Colin Mawer and Amber Courtney Mawer, both 37, one of their dogs had jumped from the ute and chased a pig, Toowoomba District Court heard.
The Mawers emerged from the house in their underwear, Mr Mawer armed with a rifle, which he used to shoot at the dog, prompting the two men and their dogs to get back into their utility and drive off.
They soon realised they were being *followed by a red sedan driven by Mrs Mawer with Mr Mawer holding a rifle in the passenger seat.
Mrs Mawer overtook the victims’ car, forcing them to stop and accusing them of being pig poachers.
Mr Mawer pointed the gun at the pair, demanding they get out of their car, and threatened to hang them from their wrists in his cold room before killing them and feeding them to his pigs. He also punched and hit both men with his rifle, threatened to rape them, shot one of their tyres, took their dogs and demanded money.
The Mawers pleaded guilty to a range of charges, saying they had lost 37 pigs to poachers and dog attacks in the months before the attack.
Amber Mawer was sentenced to 12 months jail, but released on immediate parole and disqualified from driving for nine months.
Justin Mawer was sentenced to 30 months’ jail, to be released on parole on

FERAL pig hunters on the Cassowary Coast brutalising piglets could face fines as high as $20,000.
The warning came from Innisfail Police in the wake of a report from Cassowary Coast Regional Council Division 4 councillor Mark Nolan that hunters were cutting the legs off live feral piglets and letting them stagger off to starve to death.
Cr Nolan said most hunters of feral pigs were responsible and humane but there was a small segment who were not doing the right thing.
WHY DEAD PIGS ARE CAUSING ALARM
In a letter to the Innisfail Advocate on Monday, Cr Nolan stated: “The ‘Feral Fools’ headline in Saturday’s Advocate has led me to take this opportunity to inform *residents that most pig hunters are acting responsibly and doing a great job in assisting farmers to keep the feral pig population to a minimum but there is an irresponsible element among them.
PIG HUNTERS HIT BACK AT CRITICS
“As the CCRC environment portfolio holder, I can advise that I have been inundated with complaints over recent weeks from rural residents about an unsavoury and cruel practice occurring with some pig hunters in their treatment of the animals.
PIG HUNTING UNDER SCRUTINY

“This small group of hunters are gutting pigs where they fall and then inspecting their livers for worms.
“If the liver is clean they cut the back straps and hindquarters off the pig and leave the remaining carcass to rot, regardless of location.
MILLEWA FERAL FESTIVAL FIRES UP
“Further, they have recently cut the rear legs of small piglets they have captured and released them to the wild with limited ability to move, thus dying a slow death.
“Residents living up the East Palmerston have recently had to shoot piglets left in this cruel state to put them out of their misery and bury the rotting carcasses of feral pigs being dumped beside Wadda Creek which flows into the Johnstone River system.”
Cr Nolan said Wadda Creek also passed through many farming properties and some landowners drew water from it.
He added that recent government funding cutbacks had aggravated the whole situation with feral pigs.
“The sad reality is that with the recent decision of both state and federal governments to withdraw funding from feral pig control programs, this very serious environmental issue will explode out of control,” Cr Nolan said.
“Alarmingly, the ‘feral fools’ in our community will continue to hunt wild pigs and we can only hope they change their irresponsible and cruel practices and show some respect for other property owners by not dumping rotting carcasses in public places or waterways.”
Cassowary Coast Crime Prevention Co-ordinator, acting Senior Constable Kirstel Maclean said police had not received any complaints or information regarding the cruelty to the piglets.
But she warned that *offenders face maximum *penalties of a $20,000 fine or three years’ jail.
It's okay, optics are clear at high magnification, adjusters are solid. But if I was buying again I'd go a Redfield Revolution(American made). I have one on my 303 and it is brilliant. Looking for one for the 30-06 at the moment but they seem to have gone up 50%.since they came out?
There's also the Redfield revenge, made in Malaysia, can't vouch for them.
Had a good day on the river, just now a mate called and wants to run the electric dog the mrs gave me the thumbs up got to love days like today!
