Meant UK variant GU shorty.

Alrighty, had only a brief 2 minute chat with an employee of the GU Shorty owner over here.
Turns out the UK chassis was unregisterable here (unsure why) so they transplanted the shell atop of a heavily modified and expensive engineered Aussie LWB chassis. If works done by others estimated efforts put in was $75k AUD!

That seems really strange. Who in their right mind would spend that kind of money, and effort, for this? I have seen them for sale a couple of times on Carsales for around half that, and with a RWC and registered. Just doesn't add up.
Having said that. I still want one!
Jeez MB, well done!
Sherlock Holmes eat ya heart out eh...
No-one... but... I think the clue is in MBs post about "if work was done by others" IE if the modifier has a business and/or the skills to DIY a majority of the work than the number is moot.
I know of a rig (Duramax, Portals etc etc) that would have at least 150,000 maybe even 200,000 bucks worth of mods and time in it now if it was costed out at commercial rates.
Unsure mate and was only a brief chat as mentioned. Does sound like the owner did it properly though and all was kept above board!

Quite possibly gents, will see if I can quiz the owner directly next time passing through that way. I only ‘assumed’ it was a numbers issue as Vic roads have been giving me all sorts of grief with our Japanese Patrol Firetruck too. The numbers are a few digits less and different config to Aussie numbers so their magical computers keep saying no go. I’ve been instructed to seek consultation now from a private ADR inspector off the local list they sent me.

Hence my original thoughts (maybe right, maybe wrong) but as soon as you hit any VIN that isn't in the 'Aussie Range' the flags go up at the DMV, well, over here in WA anyway.
I dunno about the Kiwi post '98 shorties, maybe easier, maybe not but the GQ's were relatively easy esp if you owned them pre-import so didn't have duties to pay etc.
I do know it is easier, much easier, getting OS model imports into NZ as the BIL family is a mob of car nuts and have had some bonzer units over the years
Dunno about WA but it is turning into a PIA deabacle here with similar:-(

Hi guys great to hear all your thoughts I plan to go through a specialist vehicle importer.Initial conversation they seem confident that they can import and register it (Brisbane) Out of interest how many digits in the Chasis numbers you have on the Aussie models ? It is a UK model I have owned it here for 4+ years so that won’t be the issue they are referred to as GR here rather than GU but think that’s just a marketing thing (Similarly Mitsubishi’s Shogun here not a Pajero)
Example only SBT mate!
16 characters, mixture of 10 letters afront, 6 numbers ending!

i'm pretty sure the VIN has 17 characters. probably need the engine number as well. have seen a few low volume imports with a VIN pop riveted above the original number. but these came from japan.
qld is easier to get things rego'd well at least easier than nsw.
Right you are Garett mate, my bad!
Also found on ours (in daylight) that the 3rd, 8th and 9th letters afront are numbers too!

ahh the letter number combo is not always the same,(between makes) but the numbers/letters do tell you where it was made when and (major options i think.) and by who.
my ford has a nissan VIN. they also don't use the full alphabet as certain letters are too easy to confuse with other characters.
Yep, 1I & 0O tricked me mate!

Yeah, no VIN is allowed to use the letters I,O or Q

Top link ET, Cheers!
Scrubbed some more mud off the utes plate, quite strange too now how the 1’s are ‘almost’ upside down T’s. The 1’s appear ever so slightly bulbous, almost like a solder trail instead of a hard edged T.

Hi all just to pick this thread up again I have now arrived here in Australia and successfully imported the GU Shorty all Rego done insurance etc No Drama and has blue MOD plate and a Personal Import plate. Roadworthy all done etc
That's great mate, was wondering how you ended up! Nice to see one getting around. Have you been able to get it dirty yet?
Pics just loaded. How do you find the tracks here? What were you doing? IE rocks, mud, sand etc?

Well done, that’ll turn some heads over here!
Did it cost much in importing it or any ridiculous tax charges etc?

Well done. Love this rig.
Great to see our aussie laws are consistent, mod plated and RWC with 35's. Lol.
Good to hear you got it registered ok.
Great looking machine, what a fun little toy.
Hi AB had to obviously pay for shipping (it came in a 40ft container with all our furniture etc) Paid import duty and GST etc but as I owned it for 4-5 years in UK prior to moving here no major problems . Don't think you can bring one in unless you have owned it and can prove it 9had to provide proof of residence in Uk service receipts etc etc But dealt with a great shipping company that took all the drama out of it.
@MB stop using PeeBee's account!!
Congratulations @SHORTBLACKTRUCK and welcome to Straya mate [emoji106]
