Roof top tents must be one of the biggest PITB items out there. Only my opinion
Do PPl really expect their wives to climb up and down a ladder , get dressed lying down.
I think they weigh a bit so you're travelling top heavy, and weight is the enemy when travelling
A good set up looked like a 30 second style tent with an awning across to the patrol.
I did have dad's tent that clipped to the back of the 4x4, at least you could drive away if required.
Do you really need a foxwing that encompasses your Patrol, most camps
I go to you find a spot for your chair and thats it, maybe move it under shelter if its raining.
For my needs I think those clip on walls enclosing the awning will be ok not ideal, but
I'll have to make sure I get ALL my wood early lol
Well the idea is to have under cover access if it's raining isn't it? The biggest access door for all your stuff is the back one (which is the one that stays open at camp site for me 90% of the time). I guess the only benefit from the side awning is a wider undercover area.
Agree about the roof top. Can't see myself getting one of those. Mrs has already given it the thumbs down too lol
@ Skiman see you camp different to me I dont need access to the patrol when camped.
we take a huge tarp where we store everything, only food is left in the Patrol via an Engel.
I'm talking camping along the Murray river, My High country set up might be different,
as would my touring set up. Not a fan of working from the back of 4x4s as the light at night
attracts plenty of insects, even using LED, cant win them all eh
Will be getting a complete Oz tent kit when I am able to which will give us multiple options and also allow for quick stops and zip it onto our current awning.

As you say, there are different setups for each occasion. I'm still fairly new to the camping scene, so am looking forward to changing a few things out and becoming more efficient now that I've got the Patrol :D
the trick to having a tarp stay put is use springs on all ropes. ours has been through plenty of savage storms and survived.
@ OD those RV 30 second type tents are great about the only downside would
be they pack up to 2mtrs long ,so therefore need to go up top, I think Drewboy has one
We've also got one of those Event 14, bloody heavy, lots of poles as you say......... but man there's plenty of room under them. We haven't done it yet but was going to spray all the seams with some sort of waterproofing stuffQuote:

On Ebay a mob called Tarp King will make any size tarp.
With your average awning a 1.9mtr x 5mtr tarp with eyelts every 300mm.
use some bungee cord along the base, all for under $150.
I'm hopefully buying a sewing machine next week to do a bit of custom work
and storage bags etc

Well I'm pretty happy with it. It gives me nearly double the space so now I can put my double swag underneath the awning and still have somewhere to sit
@ Lucas looks ok ,you'll have plenty of room now if the weather gets a bit dirty.
For me I'd like to see one more wall across the back, to be weatherproofish

I have one of the oztrail gazebo's with 3 solid walls, 1 zipper wall and a screen house inner kit
then again you dont pick rainy weekends to go away do you.
Your set up will keep the dew off you at places like Sheepyards where it gets very cold
and easy to set up etc win win lucas lol
Yeah 3D's my preference is never to camp in the rain but sometimes you cant help it. I only use the awning for quick stops or for quick overnighters with the swag underneath
If i stay for a few days we take the tent and gazebo which gives us plenty of undercover space

I picked the 2.5m size for my awning. Supercheap auto have one also but is only 2.3 metres long where as this one is 2.9 metres.
I guess it depends on your needs.
Also I should mention this fits perfectly into the sail track on my aldi awning
