The Hunters Thread...

Great to see this thread BA and timely too.... I have been doing archery for about 5 years but have always missed having my rifles. When I came to Oz, I had to sell them all as it was just too hard to bring them into the country. (all of mine were military styled semi autos, so no chance of getting them in...)

My mate and I have decided to get our licenses again. If all goes well, the 1st purchase will more than likely be a Howa 22-250, followed by a Tikka .270.

Can't wait to get out in the bush, hunting again!

Also, just read that Texas has a wild boar epidemic! Lots of places are looking for pest control! Be a great holiday...

Sent the trigger for my .243 away today to get worked on.

Have not fired a single shot from it yet.

Later I will get the metal work painted with that duro coat but not cheap. ..

Can't wait to finally have it up and running

Ok those interested in coming to the range I have spoken to SSAA and they have said as long as I have a person to monitor each non licensed shooter I can have as many guests as I like...

Now I have been heaps of times with novices and never had this... I am not bothered by it but here is the next problem.... enough firearms to keep everyone happy.

I have 3 .22's but ony 2 are good enough for consistent accurate shooting and one tends to send flyers and that can get boring.

I dont have the arsenal I use to with only my .204 as my main rifle which is my baby and I dont mind letting mates have a couple of shots with it but not shooting away all day.

I will be breaking in a .243 and will let people shoot it to see what it feels like but will not be sighted properly and I will be doing one shot one clean.

Now Irish will be breaking in his custom 30-06 and he has many rifles and I know he wont mind people having a few shots of some of them but not all day as the big gear is expensive..

He will probably let people shoot his .22's as mush as they like.... thats for him to say.

The cost for getting into the range is $30 for the whole day and I dont have enough shooters rests so some my have to hire at $10 for the day then depending on ammo the .22's are as cheap as... about 10 cents a shot.

I will take a small group with me and once I know who is coming I will go over the range rules so as to not go getting in trouble on the day.. this will be in about 2 or 3 weeks.

Good effort BA. Appreciated. Keen to have a to mate.

If you need another license I may be able to come depending on location/dates. Are you going to little river?

Whoever ends up going needs to pay very close heed to the range rules and handling rules set out by the licensed shooters and the range officer( who is ultimately in charge). A range day is lots of fun with friends, but seriously no monkey business and no playacting.

I'd have to agree as my mates and I usually shoot each other at least once before a game even starts lol

Yup, you may be right NP.

I only shoot/hunt with people I know/trust, and have no problem with reminding people of safety and expect them to remind me too.

e.g. last hunt with BA, we'd remind each other to double check our actions were cleared before getting in the 4by and verbally let the other know when safe, no ego or aggro, nobody was "the boss of shooting" we just like not having to explain to the others family why daddy/hubby is leaking because it was so damn important to get that bunny.

Guess what, we still had a laugh and a ripping time too.

If anyone gets their knickers twizzled by that kinda thing I just won't shoot with em again.

I got my trigger back today and cant wait.....

The results were factory it was at 4 pounds and I have now got it set to 1.5 pounds with zero creep (the amount the trigger moves before activating) this should be perfect for my needs but if not on its return it comes with detailed instructions on how to make small adjustments.

The bloke I use has never let me down so am confident this will not need to be changed.

This bloke offers life time satisfaction and cost me $45 plus $15 for postage..... bloody good as far as I am concerned.

Now just need to wait for Peters gunsmith to finish the mods to his Mauser 30-06 before we hit the range.


Also as Peter mentioned we went shooting the other night and it was great just getting back out there... first we went for a walk with the .22's around the farm house for 40min and hunting was 2nd place to just catching up and having a chat...

Nice to just take our time going for a walk through the bush...

Later we set my car up for spotlighting and Peter was first cab off the rank with a Hare to be no more.. just then George arrived as our spotlighting driver and thats when we really got stuck into it..

We mentioned to George if he does see anything out of place as far as safety goes to speak up as we were both a bit rusty.. every time we got back into the car rifles were checked even if we were sure we did not chamber another round .

Hares seem to be the flavour of the night and thats what makes this property owner happiest to shoot as I have helped him plant nearly 800 trees on this farm and to have those buggers neck them before they have a chance to grow sucks.

Sent him (the owner) a text message yesterday to tell him the tally and he was happy... always keep the owner happy and help out when you can goes a long way to having places to come and play!!!

the target cant see you or reconise you if you miss

If I had known I would have made more attempt for head shots but I am very rusty.....

Thanks Roofy I did not have camo on until very late and that jacket is brilliant.. light weight and warm !!!!

I use to wear camo every time I went shooting but now only wear it when really needed.

Renewed my shooters licence yesterday..... cant really afford it but cant let it lapse so $243 for another 5 years.

My race licence use to cost me more than that every year plus I club membership and entry fees for races so this much every 5 years is nothing.

Isnt it typical I went to go get my photo yesterday and it was pissing it down raining so another shit photo for 5 more years.....blah!!!!

In another 18 months my daughter will be old enough for her licence and I have put a deposit on a little .22 cricket for her... she will be rapped !!!

I'm still waiting for my licence to arrive in the mail. I had a vic licence moved to NT, used vic licence to get NT licence (no need for safety course), then when I moved back to vic to get told I have to redo the course and wait the 28 day period all over again. :( Don't have any guns thank goodness otherwise it would have been more painful trying to transfer them over to vic.

I had mine checked a few years ago, they rang first to make an appointment, took 2 minutes and all good.

I got that email nearly 2 weeks ago and did a big clean up but one thing still needs attention...... blah!!!!!

I have renewed my licence so am paranoid I am now going to get a visit.

Half way through week two of my(up to four week) wait, starting to get antsy to get the mauser back.
Mialls are supposed to be one of the best at what they do though so I'm hoping it'll look scmick.


On the police checking safes, we had ours checked about a month after we moved. They called ahead and we arranged a time that suited me.

Then, me being the paranoid soul that I am, I called VicPol to make sure the call was legit, hahaha*adjusts tinfoil hat*.

When the officer rocked up we had everything squared away, had even pulled the bolts and put em in a lock box even though thats not a requirement in VIC.
All she really wanted to do was make sure that the serial numbers on the list she had matched what was stamped on the guns.

She didn't ask to check ammo storage, barely gave the safe a second look(you'd need a bobcat to get mine out anyhow) and was chilled and friendly.

My take was that they aren't actually looking to dick you over, just like they aren't trying to fail you at the safety course, and as long as everything is as required(which it should be anyway really) and you have a good attitude, it's just a formality.
(Tip for new players, always make sure to give yourself a day or so beforehand just to double check that all your gear is safely secured, even if you know it is, you never really know, know what I mean? Don't feel pressured to just agree to any time when they call you and not give yourself a chance to double check actions etc, they aren't trying to catch you on the hop, they'd much rather everything goes smoothly). When they called me I simply said, "I can't do x day, as I've got something on, how does y day suit you?", that way, I'm not being a d*&k and I'm keeping them involved in the decision making process, which is generally appreciated as they have schedules and appointments to work around too.

The other tip for new players, up here the coppers will ask if the wife has keys or combo, the correct answer is no if she is not licensed :)

I may have purchased a new fire arm today with out telling the wife. I pick it up in 6 weeks pending on delivery or PTA approval.
Tikka t3 camo stainless with a Burris full field 4.5x14 42 ballistic plex scope chambered in 7mm rem mag
Will work nicely with my collection of a .22 for rabbits, 22/250 for fox dog small pig and now the 7mm rem mag for deer scrub bull etc. guys in the states take deer at 600 metres with the 7mm rem mag IMHO a better calibre than 300win mag.

I was warned about this in my safety course big fines etc.

Never had anything to do with the 7mm... is it a hard flat shooter??

As for the keys trick I warned Mags the first time... she can show them where the safe is but that is all..... er sorry officer I do not have the keys.

Not the one on the qld gun exchange web site ( was on the home page last week but has been replace with a pistol)? Nice looking gun if it is !

7mm rem mag shoots 120 to 180 gn projectiles over 3000fps very fast very flat but the best positive about this calibre is its knock down power down range as it is very efficient and keeps is energy well and will out perform a 300 win mag or .270

Looks like the package that was advertised, that's the sort of gun I can see myself getting.

Whats the 7mm like on the shoulder???

I wouldn't buy something this big for your first rifle though. I'll be using the .22 the most. The 22/50 will be used at our farm and the 7mm will only be used on special hunts. I plan on taking trophy deer next year with a trip to New Zealand planned with a mate and a trip this year down in nsw.
Firearm ownership is like golf you need a club for different conditions. On a positive note it's not a good walk ruined quite the opposite!

On the shoulder not bad you wouldn't want to paper punch all day with it. Some say its a bit more than a 30-06
