Any 4.2 will easily handle a turbo mate no worries as long as its not stuffed already
Hi Gisli, as growler said the td42 will be fine to turbo providing the engine is ok. there are people over here putting turbos on at 250,000 km on the speedo so no worries, get into it mate and post some pics as you do it up please.
Good to hear. But how much can the 4.2 engine handle inn turbo preassure?? I was hoping to be able to blast it with 18-20psi with out damaging something. I just tuned my engine up to 16psi now. I´ve been having some problems with the RD28T for a while. The engine gets lazy around 2300rpm and above. I´t was not like that and it worked as hell. Atlest for an 2,8 engine. But now the power has been going down. It works good on low rpm. 1200-2000rpm It´s giving alot of black smoke. The injectors are newlie rebuild. Every filter is new. And spot any leaks from the fuel lines.. So I decided to tune up the turbo. It´s vorking better. but I can still feel like the something is stopping the engine from getting on higher rpm. Seems to very hard to get it upp from 2500-3200rpm. I´m starting to consider to send the injector pump to an rebuild :/
Gisli,
You don't need to push the old 4.2 Diesels to 18 PSI to get good results, and many will tune them for around 10 - 13 PSI and be happy to have an engine that goes well, but will last forever ...... on the other hand, there are lots of guys now pushing bigger Turbos and boosts, and as long as they are tuned well, seem to last ok too.
Mic
I run mine at 15 psi but with a td05 turbo and cross country intercooler with 3" dump pipe and exhaust, it's a later motor but some guys are pushing 30 psi, I am very happy with mine, does everything I want and pulls like a train.
I could be happy with 15psi. But to my other problem with the RD28T. Yesterday I tuned to turbo up to 16psi. I got a litle more power but I´m still wondering what the hell is going on. It's just not in to high rpm. as soon as the engine goes over 2300rpm it gets lazy and wont go easily over 2300rpm. The fuel filters are new. Air filter is new. Injectors are newly rebuild. I can´t find anything wrong with the fuel lines. Everything is like new inside the fueltank. This engine is starting to piss me off. At 3000rpm it seems to be stuck. But running in 1. or 2. gear I can turn the engine to 4-5000rpm with any problems. The engine used to work good and the power was very good compered to an 2.8 The turbine has run around 5000km and I always let the engine run a couple of minute before I turn it of. So what´s the next thing to do Injector pump??? And yea while I remember. the engine does alot of black smoke when driving in 4. or 5. gear upp hils it´s like a black fog behind me. I now the engine is not getting to much fuel. Because I´ve checked the screw for the fuel volume and It´s as the same place as the sealed injector pumps are. I´m just getting confused.
Yea I'd say to much fuel.. I'd go back to stock settings and go again..
Add boost and then a little fuel..
Have you got egt gauges fitted??
Watch them like a hawk..
Have you got a dyno tuner around so you can see what's actually happening when you adjust something??
Injector is in stock settings. Always has been. I have no EGT gauges yet. I have 3 row radiator and it never gets to hot. Always around the first quarter on the gauge. So I dont worry so much about the over heating. But It would better to have EGT gauge. We are starting to wonder about the timing on the injector pump. My friend had an idea. Maybe the timing is not working on higher rpm. Is that something that can be fixed with out removing the pump? I check the timing on the timing belt and everything matches. I don´t know the word for this thing wich is suposed to change the timing on the pump when the rpm gets higher. Atleast not the english word. Would be nice if someone could tell me that and also could it be fixed og changed. If I have remove the injector pump.. Then I´m thinking of another pump to put to rebuild and change when I get it back. In that way I don´t have to stop the truck for a maybe few days or some. I´m renting the truck out to a filmaker called peagsus. Tehy are doing a tv series here in Iceland. And the main actor is suposed to own the truck in the series. So I can´t stop the truck for to time. Time is money :p
Not familiar with the 2.8's so unsure if their a variable timing or not..
If it's gear or chain driven like the 4.2's then yea you'll have to dismantle and adjust..
But I'd go a egt gauge..
Well. now it seems to be ok on high rpm. But it´s still to lazy when driving up hills. It´s almost working as well as it did before everything got fucked up. But than the boost was only 12psi max. Now it goes from 14-16psi... This engine is realy starting to piss me off. :/
just a thought , but , what exhaust system do you have , maybe the catalitic converter or muffeler may be partially blocked .
another longshot ! maybe it is running too cold . I have had experience with this a couple of times many years ago when going snow skiing . we ended up putting a plastic sheet across most of the radiator to make the car run warmer to get better performance until we came down to lower a altitude . I have also read somewhere about someone cooling the intake air to cold with a water to air intercooler so that the fuel mixture would not ignite properly . over here most cars run a little over half way on their temperature gauges . if the car does not run warm enough it will not run efficiently . it would be easy to check , just put some cardboard or plastic over the front of car and maybe also the intercooler intake just for a quick test . be careful not to run it too long or you will cook the motor .
I'd leave the ic for the minute. You want to get the air as dense as possible.
But I do agree with the radiator to bring up the engine temps..
Have you had it tuned properly??
It has always had a good running until now. But. I don´t give a shit now. Because I talk to the owmner of the 4,2 patrol and found out that it has a turbo. But the original non turbo injector pump is stil in the engine. So I need to find antoher injector pump when I get the truck. I´m going to wisit the guy in may and buy the truck. So mine will soon have a 4.2 again :) Maybe I´ll make a table from the RD28T to have in the living room :p
Ha, Ha Gisli,
I still had the original pump on my 4.2 and added a Turbo - it handled it OK , and so has another friend of mine ....
Mine did have the Aneroid Mod though, which isn't necessary for it to work, it just helped to prevent it belching black smoke all the time.
Mic
G'day Gisli,
Where in "East coast of Iceland" are you. I grew up as a countryman of yours, in Egilsstadir. Been an Aussie now for some 19 years. Still miss snow driving though, we don't get much of that here Downunder
Hi there. I live in Eskifjörður. 50km from Egilsstaðir :) But one question for all the experts. Does the 4.2 non turbo have the same injector nozzles as the 4.2 turbo??
Does no one have the answer to my question?
Yes they do. If you turbo your TD you will need to tune the fuel pump to suit
Sent from my iPhone using my thumb
Does the factory td42t have different crack pressure to non turbo?
I remember reading the black top came factory De-compressioned a little??
If I have understood this correct. Than I been told that 1989 the 4.2 was called silvertop. And I been told that it has the same pressure as the turbo engine. It´s aslo suposed to bee stronger engine in 89 than after 94. But I have no idea. That´s why I´m asking you mates all cind of questions about the 4.2. Since I don´t know anything about this engine :)
I think some things were made a bit bigger in the pre 94 motors, but both have proven themselves to be built proof..
Also I have a 91 sliver top and I think they went up to 94..
Beneboy has black top and is getting some good power. Both engines are fine for turbo
Can´t wait to get the 4.2 :D My friend told me that I would just be disappointed with the 4.2. Hes sais that it´s not worth the money. But I look at it this way. I have an engine that I sell for much money. And if I don´t like it. There is always cummins :)
Washed the trucks today :)

This patrol owner desided to break an axle or locking hub. Still waiting for some news from him. I told him to put Y60 axles and throw this dana 44 axle to the trash. He got pulled up all hills on the back. But he could drive on only the rear wheels down all the hills untill we got on hard snow that could hold the truck. So the 48" monster followed him back to the asphalt :D
That looks awesome Gisli....
Thanks mate :)
Very nice pics thx
Looks awesome Mate!
Are these GQ's have diesel engines?
What is the lowest temperature when you drive your?
Do you cover front radiator when extreme cold?
All of the Y60´s in the picture have 2.8 TD We don´t need to cover the radiator. That day we had around -5° in the mountain. I have a 3 row radiator and the engine never gets to hot. It can go up the midle of the gauge if I drive it on 5000rpm in the low range for a while. But that only happens when I´m racing with someone. To do that the snow needs to be so hard that the truck hardly marks in the snow. But the most of the driving is in the first 3 gears. So it´s not often that we get to race with each other. :p
We cover radiator for faster heating of the engine when -20 outside.
Iceland monster race? Great hobby mate!
No need to do that here :)
Latest ideas. I´ve been thinking for a long time to put the truck on 44" tires. Now I´m thinking about 46" tires. I´m thinking about Mickey thompson baja claw 46/19.5-16" The rims will be 16X20" That wil give a great flotation. And it will look good on the truck. What do you guys think?
Great off road terrain! Around here it is forbidden to drive outside the road. Seems like you can drive around where ever you like :)
You'll be impressed with the 4.2 motor Gisli. Especially coming from the 2.8 it will be so much better and more powerful with the right work done to it.
I'd love a patrol with 46 inch tyres =)
