Wasn't your wallet dragging on the ground lol
The noise I was hearing was from all the coins I had in there. I once had $23.90 in coins in my wallet.
F........g annoying.
Just got a phone call by a guy saying he found my wallet in the city. Drove there and I have my wallet back. All my cash and cards still there and gave him $20. You beauteeeeeeee.............
Had my 40k service at Nissan. Explained everything I noticed, heard, smelt and seen.
The problem they found, was that I had NO problem,
No evidence on disc or pads or calipers. No faults found. Car running much better after service.
Guess what, it's had happened again but in the passenger side this time. No it's not the road, I used Dynon road today, traffic horrible normal way.
Now I have some ideas as to what it may be.
As the noise was very similar and very clear, sounding almost like when gears are trying to come together but are still slipping.
Could it be the hubs trying to connect as they are on auto.
Cos as I was slowing down to pull over, just a few seconds before stopping I could feel the clunk (but with no noise) as they either meshed or withdrew.
Or when the gears (in an auto) went into first it made that clunking feeling.
Once again I heard it stopped, felt the clunk, had a look, drove again all ok, then it started again, I stopped again feeling that same clunk again just before stopping, didn't get out this time. Started driving again and hasn't happened again 28kms to home.
Just after the second start, as traffic was slow by then I could smell that brake paddy type smell, but I don't think it's a brake pad smell. Does gear oil or trans oil or diff oil smell when heated.
ie: assuming the noise was gearing related friction caution high temps in the oil.
Edit: I remember the smell now, it's like when you ride the clutch for ages.
Could it be auto hubs trying to engage for some reason.
Can someone please explain in donkey terms, how an auto hub operates, how it works, what it does, when does it automatically engage and for what reasons. A little broad I know, but mi be verry stoopid.
Is it like an AWD, changing power to wheels with less resistance. I don't know, just a stab in the dark.
Brains of Patrology, let there be light. Lol. NP forum forever.

It certainly sounds like it could be one of the hubs Mego.
I know it is hard to pick, but any ideas on what direction the sound was coming from.
All the hub does is lock a gear in the end of the hub onto the end of the axle spline, thus causing the hub to be locked to the axle.

To my knowledge the auto hub is like a ratchet spanner. It need drive from the axle to lock up.
But I do hear a lot of people having issues..
Next time you hear it and stop, try turning the front drive shaft.
If all good, it should spin freely, if engaged it will show resistance as your turning the whole setup.
But when you stop it may already have unlocked, so.....
Grab a laser temp reader and take some temps down of hub temps when making noise and when not.. you shouldn't see huge variants.

I'm no expert but is the lock on the hub in the correct position ie not halfway between lock and auto , just a thought
Gaddy
When I stopped to have a look today realising it may be the hubs, I did check both sides to see if they were aligned properly.

Left side: problem side today.
Hi mego i dont know but could be in the valve body of the trans,if its getting that hot to smell of clutch brake, if it happens again stop some place of the road and get under and feel the tranny it will be hot but if you think its overheated maybe thats where the trouble lies thought you would have had a gauge for the transmision oil
just a thought, auto wheel lock is engaged when you put the stubby stick in gear, try moving it in and out a few times maybe its not engaged properly but then it wouldnt drive either if that was the case, but from what you where saying my guess is the valve body
you know when they run that truck down the road and suck and roll the tar bleed out the road your not running on that
It was just a thought / guess ,
I will give it a go, if it happens again.
Do you think it is really required?Quote:

I did put it into 4H on the fly after it stopped the second time. Then back into 2H again. It changed very smoothly.Quote:

The clunk your feeling is the auto dropping into first gear coz your stopping in a hurry.
If the transmission is overheating the trans oil will be an orangey pink in color and will smell like burnt fish and chips, sort of!!
That is what i was meaning....so it sound like it is coming from the front wheel - what can happen is the gear in the hub can cause this clicking sound when they are over greased or are not working properly
I haven't had any problems with mine ever as mine gets serviced by Nissan themselves, and they wouldn't spare any extra grease.....;)

Here is some more info off the net... not my pictures and not my text...
>>> G'day all,
>>> The Patrol auto hubs have a habit of making clicking noises and not engaging and disengaging properly. You can fix them by removing the auto locking mechanism, making them a manual hub. Auto becomes free and locked is still locked. And it's easy to do.
>>> Remove the hubs from the vehicle, shift them to the locked position, and using a large screw driver or small lever bar, prise out the auto locking mechanism. There are six steel tangs holding the mechanism in place, so it takes a bit of force to do. You can see which part you need to remove in the photos.

Hub on the right is how it looks when you first remove it from the vehicle, hub on the left has the auto mechanism removed.

This pic shows the underside of the auto mechanism. Hubs are ready to refit.
Yours is under warranty, so I would get Nissan to check it again....
But I am stopping slowly and safely, definitely not braking hard at all. Actually probably braking and stopping with much more finesse then normal.
I check this also if it happens again.Quote:

The auto could be shifting down a bit lazily no big deal.
If you think the brakes are staying on the disc's will be a dark bluey black color aswell
You can check the color of the oil any time coz it should be a light red colour
When would the auto hub engage, under what circumstances.
i got that sound like 'the kids put a card in the spoke' when driving.. sends me nuts and i can't see anything under the car or around the wheels on the driver side.. i always thought it was a 'reverb' when driving close to objects.. but happens all the time!
You haven't been driving with the hand break on ?? It happens all the time or has the hand break been adjusted??
Some times it can be up 1 click and you'll never notice but was just a thought. In this trade anything is possible, we had a lady complain for months about a rattle she got after we serviced her car after 3 days testing we found a glass platter she had forgotten in the back had slid under the passengers seat at was tapping the rail!!!
2 months now and hasn't returned, thank god.
