Nice. Scotty's little black insertion tool :-) I bet your other rattle gun sockets are nervous now!

The last seal that give me troubles was the large seal that goes on the inside of the hub, after the inner wheel bearing goes in, on Bob's ute. Rocked and rolled out of the way as it was tapped in and generally give me the irrits :-). Not helped by being towards the end of a longish day, and topped off by a trip to buy another new replacement because I twisted the first one :-)

And did I see a nice shiny new parts washer? Ah, the smell of deodorised kerosene, and the gently splatter of the well worn parts washer brush.

Shows the wisdom in choosing the new place. Nice to have a floor and a roof, and the ability to just pull the door down at work's end for the day.

Yep, not overly patient with oil seals, but alas it's for a purpose so I'll persevere and hopefully I can patent the tool and make my money back!!!! lmao

Seriously, knock up one of those oil seal tools yourself if you're ever doing them!!! Outstanding!!!

Knocked straight in, no kinks, no mis-shaping.

Going to make a cup style die that sits over the top of the original for the larger rear seals.

Anyone in brissy ever doing their seals, you know where there's a tool to make the job a breeze!

Anyone got some tips and tricks for removing the bearing from the stub axle housing (I think that's what it's called!! lol)?? Got the seal off no drama, but having a time of it with the bearing itself (the smaller single faced roller bearing on the removable housing --- I really should take a picture hey??!! lol).

And found the only bits of rust in the chassis on the weekend under the spare tyre rail/carrier, so removed it, ground the rust out, treated it with Fertan, and made a plate to cover the nastiness (other side already tacked on).

I don't remember any issues at all removing those from Silver or from Bob's ute, which tells me they weren't a drama.

I wonder whether they have started to come out crooked? If so, tap the high side down?

It would be tempting to try and collapse the cage into the centre, since they are so thin - but be vewy vewy caweful not to mark the surface the rollers run in

someone will have a better idea, I'm sure :-)

Nope, they're not coming out crooked boss - just not coming out at all to this point!! lol - going to go get a slide hammer tomorrow to try and sort them out ... apart from that, the front end is just about ready to start going back together!!! Yay ... have to take the rear axles down to Derek's though to use his press on the bearings and get those lock nuts off ... they're somewhat stubborn also - Dhuck had a lash on the weekend, and I thought a bit more bulk would do the trick, but alas, I failed also ... they're tight!!

Hey Bigrig,

Make sure that you keep the bearing cup nice and straight and it should come out nicely. You need to insert a long screwdriver ( that you dont mind donating to the cause as the end may get damaged ) or preferably piece of bar with a flat end from the other side, and keep rotating the hub as you tap the cup out. You can start by tapping at 0, 180, 90, 270 degrees and keep tapping evenly till it starts moving, and then you can just tap consistently wherever trying to keep the cup parallel / flat.

The other alternative is to heat up the hub itself with an oxy set to expand the hub slightly - not the bearing cup, and help free it from home by tapping as above.

Thanks mate - usually would tap through from the other side, however, the edge appears to not be visible/reachable with a screwdriver through the centre ... that said, I'll have a better look.

My mate has an oxy set if you want us to bring it with the mig on sat and what start time do you want

Can you hook your oilseal removal tool into the cage and get it started?

I know you'll be pushing the other side of the bearing cage down unless you get a bit creative?

Oh, I'll get creative old mate!! lmao

The other thing to try, which you can usually do on an external bearing cup is to grab a grinder and carefully grind one of two flat sides on the cup, til it has nearly gone right through. The heat expands it a little, and also makes a weak spot.

For your situation, you would need a die grinder or a dremel type tool, where you can grind a groove or two into the cup, which then makes it much easier to remove once it cools down. The groove becomes a weak spot where the cup collapes in on itself away from the hub.

Really enjoying this thread. Great to see the "family" thing happening in a good way.

Don't take it for granted though. My son just turned 18 and he is not the slightest bit interested. Couldn't care less about driving. Knows he'll have to one day to get around, but that's about the only motivation. Here the traffic is pretty terrible (understatement really - probably life threatening most days - ha ha !) so I can understand him not wanting to drive on the road. But he's not interested in offroading or camping or stuff either. He came on a big week long trip deep in the desert back in 2006, mostly to keep me happy. Ended up enjoying it in the sense that he saw some interesting things and knew that not many people get the chance to go to such places. However, it's just not his thing.

Mostly just a computer geek (that's probably my fault as well as I work here in IT), but not interested in mechanical things or driving, etc. Don't take this the wrong way, he's a great kid, I'm proud of him and we still get along well, but just don't have this one thing in common. So, that's what I mean about not taking it for granted. Enjoy it, coz it's really great to see it working from this distance.

Hahahaha ... he's going gang busters and is enjoying it (even if dad has to pay for a little more grease than is normally required!!).

Got the bearings out of the rear axles and new ones and seals in - what a challenge!! Front is all done and so the reassembly is starting ... Macca bought around the sheet metal for the cabin work tonight, and the body chop starts on Saturday ... can't wait truth be told.

Going somewhat ahead of plan, but putting back together is far more difficult than pulling apart, so the process will slow from here no doubt - especially with Liam learning how to knock in bearing seats and seals etc (very differently as he found out tonight - ones made of steel, the other isn't!!). Think he's having a ball and is really understanding that it's not all fun (he found bearing packing to be quite tiresome and as many of us know, he now knows that even just standing at the parts cleaner, leaning forward washing parts etc is taxing work ...).

And so it continues ... this truck should be an awesome first vehicle for him ... something I'm trying to make sure of!!!

Progressing well with the wheel hubs, axles, etc back in place with all new seals and bearings - just got to sort new cylinders on the rear drums and anti-rattle plates and pads for the front discs and the tyres/wheels are ready to slot back on ...

The fun stuff starts now with the continued cleaning of the chassis, and the strip and clean down of the body and panels ready for paint once the welding and rust removal is complete ...

Getting there faster than expected, but help as usual from forum members making it a far more seamless job (thanks again Macca!!!!).

Also (and please forgive me if i have missed it) what lift and tyre size do you plan to run?

Haha ... Tank definitely is being neglected mate - its next on my list!!!

Going to put in a SAX 3SDS 3" suspension kit so that'll more than sort out the lift and the flex. No bar work planned yet, but no doubt it will happen.

Got the sills cut out and welded up today and the floor pan cut out also (and cleaned up the headlight mounts to remove and treat rust). Doesn't look like much, but a great effort from the team (MudDonk, Macca and myself .. less of myself though as I had some serious observation to do with a can in hand .... to get rid of the dusty feeling I had this morning in my head from long conversations with MudDonk around the fire last night!!! lmao).

Couple of happy snaps and still very happy with the progress. Planning on getting another project truck after this, so if anyone wants to go shares on one and work on it together to sell for profit, then let me know!!!

I thought the late model ones had the 4.2 Diesel?

there was some 4 litre petrol ones and 3.3 diesels in the MQ and the 3.3TD diesels in the MK.

but from memory the GQ wagons and GQshorty's came out but the GQ ute first came out with the MK guards but GQ grill and round headlights for a year or so before they changed fully to the GQ shape.
they had the GQ running gear and 4.2 diesel.

His is an 89 GQ mate - same front end as such (minus headlights, grill and the like) as the MK, but with a Carby TB42 - according to Nissan, the overlap between the MK and GQ lasted for 2 years (1987-1989) so there is a few out there that are hard to determine from look and as per ours, we had to check the VIN plate (Y60).

The VIN plate is the best to check the difference between the later MK utes and the GQ early utes
But the MK utes have rectangle headlights unlike the round headlights of the MQ , and the GQ s have the round headlights,so seems a step backwards or forwrds in the transitition
The dash is a giveaway also, the GQs have the GQ dash,gear sticks opposite sides, the rear diffs are centred on the GQs, the spring hangers are different
The MK still have the shackle pins in the rear rails, the GQs havent,lots of little things
Ive the MK here and mate has a leafy GQ ute

Im enjoying the build threads lately

Not much progress this week, but have attacked most rust, and cut out the floorpan as well as removing the windshield and attacking the rust on the roofline to get it ready for paint prep. Lots of bogging and cutting and welding to be done yet, but hit the drivers side sill last night and it's come up a treat - photos not great, but it's a nice finish. Hit it with a heavy grinding disk, then a flap disk, then a light sand to get the rolled edges back to something like original - have created a mammoth task for myself, but will be worth it ...

Haven't done the bottom edge yet, but I'm sure you'll get the gist of it. Haven't done a lot of panel work in my time, so nice to be learning something new.

Going to be a long weekend of cutting, shaping, grinding and puttying, but that should see it just about ready to be stripped and cleaned ready for paint ...

It'll be rolling again on the weekend also as the brake cylinders will be done and a full bleed of the system and wheels back on ... Ready to roll out and degrease the chassis and clean ready for its makeover also!!

One hell of a project, great to watch someone else doing the work, hahahahahaha

Next you'll be learning to lead wipe, BigRig. Nicer than bog.............
