Yeah mate, it's a sporterised 303.
You're half right, the military rounds for them were designed to go through people and do a lot of damage on the way through(FMJ), but you'd have to be a bit silly to use mil surp rounds for hunting game.
There is an abundance of civilian hunting ammo available for them off the shelf from all the major manufacturers with hunting projectiles that mushroom up nicely and hang onto a lot of weight. Remington corelokts and winchester SuperX spring to mind straight away.
I make up handloads for mine using Hornady projectiles.
I've kept the powder charge on the low side(60yr old rifle), having some success with between 39 & 40gn of AR2208, using the 150gn Interlock soft point spitzers. Playing around with seating depth now.
I wouldn't mind trying out a few more projectile types in it, as the only others I've used for the 303 are Sierra matchkings, which are not something I want to be hunting with.
Gets to be a bit of an expensive exercise if you but a box of projectiles and they dont like your gun though, so i'm a bit hesitant.
I use the Nosler balistic tip boattails in 55gn in the 223 and they group really well, so I've just got to sit down and bust out a bunch to have on hand.
I'm excited I've got my bow
It's a Bear Mauler set at 70lb no broad heads yet but look out if yer a white dot

I haven't shot a bow for 10 years its a bit windy today and I was watching the sights waver all over the place but I'm happy with that so far. Got heaps of practicing to do before I go chasing bunnies and foxes on my mates property, then hopefully pigs one day

nice one mate what distance is that ? makes me want to upgrade my bow that one looks sweet mines like 15 yr old now maybe a new toy will get me back into it mmm..
The groupings are 10m and the scattered white dots are at 20m gotta get to a range hopefully this Saturday and set the other 3 pins out to 50m

Also I bought mine from an eBay store in the US was $300 cheaper than in oz and came with arrows and a release aid
Got the arrows cut down (6) to suit my draw length today and field points and bought an arm guard for $25
Double Tap
arm guard??? did you get the matching fingernail protectors also ? lol so you had no issues gettin the bow past customs? cheers, gotta love ebay ill have to check it out.
Hahahhaahaha yep and the fingernail protector. Hit my arm once with the string years ago very much hurt. But mostly to hold sleeves back from getting the string fouled
In SA there aren't restrictions on Bows or Crossbows I could of just a easily imported a 180lb compound crossbow.
When I get home ill send you a link for the joint I went through
Double Tap
sweet thanks mate always wanted a xbow too lol
May have just PM you a link dunno if it worked via iPhone tho so if not ill try again later

tossing up the idea of looking at a 223 later on
I'd not bother with a .223 you'd be better to get a 22/250 if that's the size you're after shoots harder flatter and slightly larger projectile and more forgiving for a clean kill compared to a .223.
I have a Remington sps stainless 22/250 with a redfield 3-9 40mm scope currently hand loading barns 55 gr projectiles at about 3200 fps according to the powder chart and load size

Once disturbed
Don't under estimate the 223. Yes the 22-250 has bit more punch so does the 220 Swift, but like everything there are trade off's. What do you plan to hunt and at what range's and be honest to yourself. I put it to you this way they use 223's in F Class shooting up against 308's and that can be out to 1000y, BUT they arn't your standard of the shelf rifle but just shows you what can be done. Yes I have a very modified 22-250 with a NF 5.5-22x56 scope and love it but it's also on it's 3rd barrel due to throat errosion ( this is not due to lack of cleaning ). Another round to consider and again depending on what vermin and range is the good ol 222 and its still popular. There are others eg 22PPC, 22 Waldog these are used in BR class and at the other end is the 22 Chetah barrel burner.
But first thing to think of is what vermin and what realistic range you think you'll go out to and work from there.
Still having fun with it and havent got out on any bunnies yet. And you now youre back up in pig country???
Old, old thread, but I just picked up a new to me .22lr and shot some targets over the dam out the back yesterday. Think it shoots quite well given the two bourbon cans with lean over a foot stool on the patio table...
The locations of the groups were interesting as I was switching around through different ammo to see if there was something it really liked.
Rifle is an Anshutz 1712 with a cheap Leupold 3-9 scope on it for the time being.
.22 is just such a fun calibre to muck around with.

Youngest Littlen has recently divulged her unbeknownst true joy over shooting bow targets at an interschool camp earlier this year. A local Archery club throughout lockdown here has kindly got the Genesis ball rolling for home practice remotely delivered before joining officially down the road one day hopefully soon [emoji106][emoji106]

Nice one mate. Great to see the younger generation getting into it.
Sharp shooter!! Get her out in the paddock to guard the GU from steering wheel chewing beasts!
Was hoping to show y’all my first ever lever fever Winchester purchase (In truth Browning designed told) model 94 30-30. Post lockdown heavier feral cleanup desperately needed out at the scrub block as an all rounder. Unfortunately she’s straight back this afternoon to the shop for Mr Smith to sort out that apparently “always” faithful 1895 cowboy action [emoji23]
Here’s what a shiny one looks like, short & light enough to hopefully get the job done humanely with more than enough punch within the scrub hopefully eventually [emoji1696]

So how does that sighting system work @MB? It can only be aligned at one distance due to the offset or is the scope a wide MOA 1:1 magnification only? Is your rifle a top eject?
Red dot [emoji837] minute of angle (MOA) I believe Philstar and yes top eject. Not sure if I’ll keep it on yet, previous owner installed mate.

Let me know if you don't as it might go well on mine - side eject, just need a different mount. Maybe it would be better with a higher mount in line with the barrel? Kind of looks odd unless you are a hammerhead shark!
