Here we have 95% of all PATROLS GQ with RD28T engines and most of GU with 3,0 aluminium "hand granate" - rest are TD42
So - most of our beauties are 2,8 turbos. I have never met turbo problem like You have. Even if those engines are having not a bit as good reputation as 4,2 diesels. And believe me - our Patrols have hard times here: highways with no speed limits and half of a million km on each tachometer.
I admit my former colegues - check easy things first - could be even thermostat or visco vent problem: then Your engine is never warm enough - dense oil goes intensively to smoke-pipe before turbo and there You have it. Also snorkel turned backwards makes underlimit presure - driving very fast makes quite the same symptoms.

g'day bloke
thanks for your response - no temperature problem - 3/8 .. regular as laxative.
visco vent? what is this?
snorkel is forward-facing (force-fed by the air-stream)
driving fast - yes, i'll admin i sit on 3500-4000 on the highway sometimes if i'm on a roll

My turbo looks exactly like photos 07 and 08. Think it's time to look in some of the hoses like you and see what is going on. It has done 350k thus far.
I questioned my mechanic about the leak and he said the only seal in a turbo is around the bearing and is at high pressure, if that goes everybody in your street will know it (big black clouds).
I just had the clutch hydrailics all replaced, cylinders and lines. He said after when he started the car in his workshop that he had to sweep up a good cups worth of soot out the exhaust. Looks like it's shaking something dirty free on each start up. Guess this could all be related?

ive got a 97 gq with a rd28t at 206000km and its got the same problem leaking out the turbo in all honestly if its not loosing pressure and not blowing smoke it doesnt bother me on top of that i park in my driveway and no oil leaks on the floor eather.
so in my opinion on the next major service which is this weekend ill have a look but it is still no good because oil shouldnt be there in the first place.

just had a quick look at mine and i think i found the culpret hopefully it the turbo outlet hose that connects to the manifold because it was seeping out of the hose from the manifold end, checked the clamp and sure enough it was loose, tightend it a full 1 1/2 turns so check yours and see if its the same problem.
Cheeres stevo.

My turbo was all wet by oil and I thought that it will die soon, but then I found out a leakage from the return pipe and the body of turbo.

wine_maker we have the same problem, i think we need a catch can lol

I already have it. But it has low efficiency. But after rebuild of engine I have only a few drops of oil inside it after 3000 km.
