Few years back I ended up adding too much grease to those bearings and grease was oozing out of the scrapers.
On top of that I did the stupid thing of applying a thin layers of sealant to the bearing cap shims as well.

One of my axle seals are leaking slowly now and need to be done soon.
A messy but quite DIY'able job as I've been told by MudrunnerTD by his threads.

I'm not sure smell's the best way to detect front CV axle leaking slowly. Mine does leak(one side) but I smell no diff oil.
May be 'cos I overgreased the king pin bearings?!

Drop the lowest one of the bottom swivel bearing bolts and poke a bit of stiff plastic in there. If there is diff oil it should dribble out.
