That is indeed an ugley fix as the engine needs to be removed for that job. The leak is probably between sandwich plate and the block. Good luck

Finally have the Patrol back: issue was a leak in the steel gasket between the front engine cover and the block. It is not possible to remove the cover unless you drop the sump. It is not possible to drop the sump unless you separate the engine from the gearbox (two studs in back of the sump inside the bell housing).
Finally just removed the engine and worked on it on the bench. Too much stuff in the timing gears etc to work in the engine bay.
We did discover serious coking in the inlet manifold, so now I am fitting a Provent. Dual Dawes with electric solenoid will follow.
What a nightmare !!!!
