Hi Steve and welcome to the forum. I have had three patrols, including the diesel 4.2 as well as the 4.5l petrol. I also drive cruisers at work. I love the toyotas except for the prado which I loath. The drawback I find with the 'yotas is price and running gear.
The thing I love about the patrols, in particular the 4.2 diesel, is that it is damn near indestructible. If serviced and maintained regularly, it will go forever. It may not be the fastest but it is the most reliable. (IMO)
The 4.5l was another great wagon but as Westy stated, I would go for the 4.8l if going for a petrol.
Hope this helps, which ever way you go.
Hey guys whats the auto box like on the GU?
Crap mate buy a gq and zero hassles...haha
In all seriousness ask any questions in a different section as a lot of people don't read the introductions and you may not get a good response to help you.
Like my one above... Lol

Welcome aboard mate......... As far as choosing between a GU or a landcrab goes, at the end of the day the choice is yours and depends on how much your willing to pay. I see you've got a pretty good budget, so you've got a good range of vehicles to choose from. Bang for buck I'd go the GU, you can get a far better specced and newer Nissan than Toyboata for the same money. All I'm going say is what ever you choose, check the history and get it fully checked out........ Good luck mate
P. S. I agree with AB, get a GQ instead. 10k will see you with a good TD42 and keep the other 10 to 20k to do whatever with ;):D
P. P. S whoever told you that Toyboatas don't have issues, is full of bat guano
Steve,
I have owned 4 three litre Patrols and have had no issues with any of them...
I dont have my head in the sand, as I traded my 2001 model, and I was worried about the engine issues.
My 2003 model is still owned by a customer of mine, and has over 270,000 reliable klms on it
Mic
I will probably end up getting a 3.0L as the 2 nice low k 4.2TD GU's I've seen yesterday on the internet are 4 trillion billion million miles away from me...grrrrr.
