Your calcs are a little off, you would have to getting 12/100 at $1.54 per litre, as 77x2 is 154 not 144, so 12/100 out of the diesel is certainly achievable at those costs. You must have a big gas tank too at 17/100 over 4500km is 765L of gas which equates to an average of 85c/litre and a lot of fills. So if you double the 85c you are now at $1.70/L for diesel. I could do the same trip and only have to stop 4 times for fuel but at pretty much the same cost as yourself.
Its all horses for course really. The diesels (td42) hold their value but cost more in servicing costs, the diesels (td42) will more often than not go 500k without to many issues at all. The petrol (tb42) are cheaper to buy but don't hold their value either, unless they have been looked after extremely well by 500k they are going to be fairly tired. I really don't think there really is much between the 2. I have never towed with a tb42 so cant comment on them but I know the TD42's don't differ much between towing and not towing.
