Thanks for all the posts guys its really helping me narrow it down a bit lol i think scrap the ls1 and rb30 ideas and focus more on the tb42 and td42 want i want to use the rigs for is 4x4 trips and camping trips oh yeah and some that will tow a 23ft boat lol! What are they like for towing??? And yeh also something i can drive everyday and not cost to much so yeh im not really asking for much am i!!!! Lol thanks again guys feel like im right at home on this forum lmao
a TD42 turbo will have more grunt for towing and better economy. Not to mention sound so much better =]
I had the TB42 on gas and it's a good motor but the TD42 is so much better for me.
For heavy towing 4.2 tdi . I tow a 2.5t signature . My dad tows 3.2t whitley . And a good mate tows a 24 ft plate comerical fishing boat . Dont ask the weight when loaded We all have GU4.2tdi .manuals.
Forgot the brother in law tows a bertram bahemar behind a gq 4.2 turbo as well,
As for fuel economy non of us know , if ya gotta worry about the economy ya can't afford the toys
How was it cheaper on gas Winnie? Gas might be half the cost but you go half as far on it. I regularly see 13-14/100 out of my td42ti running 25psi and will see 17-18/100 towing nearly 3t. Sharees GQ ute will do under 12/100.Quote:

Im not saying the diesel is cheaper than the gas, I just don't think there is anything really between the 2. Your calcs are a little off, you would have to getting 12/100 at $1.54 per litre, as 77x2 is 154 not 144, so 12/100 out of the diesel is certainly achievable at those costs. You must have a big gas tank too at 17/100 over 4500km is 765L of gas which equates to an average of 85c/litre and a lot of fills. So if you double the 85c you are now at $1.70/L for diesel. I could do the same trip and only have to stop 4 times for fuel but at pretty much the same cost as yourself.Quote:

They weren't my exact figures, but they are close enough for argument sake. And yea I had to stop for fuel a heap. But it worked well with driver fatigue so it didn't really both me. Plus with girls in the car, needed to stop every 5 mins :pQuote:
